First Birthday Cake
Last minute cake I threw together for my son's first birthday. It was the end of a looonng cake week and I wasn't going to make one but got a hair up my hiney and threw this together. WASC w/ MMF.
Done for a huge Anaheim Angels fan. Gumpaste brim and logo. MMF over lemon cake. Pound used for the hat and baseball (firm and holds shape of pans).
Cake for a boy shower. Additional flowers and petals on the board were added after I had a huge condensation bubble blow out on the left side of the cake. Sugar flowers, baby and blanket. All edible.
The Leaning Tower Of Pisa
Wow. What can I say. Over 60 hours of labor in 3 days. Oh, yes, that's right ....do the math - no sleep and alllll work. A knock off of Buddy Valasco's cake featured on the The Cake Boss. The client's daughter is off to Italy and this was her farewell cake. Suffice it to say that if YOU get an order for this cake start your price at $800-$1000. It is UNBELIEVABLY labor intensive. I abandoned many plans I had for a far more detailed cake since the overabundance of time, labor and child neglect involved far outweighed the meager compensation. Sure, I'll humiliate myself and tell you - $120.00. Yep. No typo. Never again. Bottom is 8" two layers, "floors" 6" one layer one 1/2" foam core, top is 5" two layer. Columns are gumpaste. 100% edible. Pound cake w/ raspberry BC filling. $120.00 - WHAT WAS I SMOKIN'???? The up side is that she did tip me after I DELIVERED it: $10.00. As in "ten".
Off Set Square Hydrangea
My first wedding cake!!! The bride wanted sentiments from her loved ones incorporated on the cake and she wanted the draping and hydrangeas. I thought, "Text??? On a wedding cake and NOT make it look cheesy...wow! Here goes nothin'..." This is my first square cake since a practice one in January and a horrible BC square bday cake. Credit to Sugarshack's BC and Fondant DVDs for my success with this. 5", 8", 11" Red Velvet top and bottom w/ WASC in the middle. Silk flowers (wish I would've done them in sugar but the bride wanted silk). MMF mixed w/ Fondx (hate that stuff! NEVER again!) that was mixed with Jennifer Dontz's fondant recipe. Edible images and ink for the text.
Hat Cake (?)
So....yyeeaaa...I was baking a cake for a tasting and she says, "Oh, Monday - that's our anniversary too!" So, I say, "Oh then you can just take the whole cake and I'll pretty up for you." Well, it ended up looking like a hat cake, we both agreed. So, that's what I have to call it, I guess. A hat cake. So the only fitting gallery is "Mother's Day Cakes". I was just trying to make it presentable. And I made it a "hat"....hmph. Chocolate w/ choc MMF. Gumpaste heart.
Hot Wheels Car Cake
A Free Cakes For Kid's cake. If you're not a volunteer yet, check it out at www.freecakesforkids.com (non profit org for underprivileged kids). This cake is for Jesus "Chuy" who is turning 4 and who is one of 9 kids. Mom lost her job in Jan. They lost their house. She asked for "just something small if you could...just for the kids." She said he likes hot wheels. I took the opportunity to practice a 3D car cake following the instruction in Mike Mc Carey's Cakenology DVD. I used too soft a cake (choc) and too soft a ganache under the fondant but it turned out perfect for a 4 year old's standards, I hope ; ). They have no idea they are getting this cake! How fun is that?!?!? Practice for me and an amazing gift for them. Just payin' it forward....
Zoo Birthday Cake
Done for two brothers celebrating together. 10" 2 layers, 8" one layer, 6" two layers. Lemon w/ vanilla BC and MMF. The worst ever, driest EVER batch of MMF, I might add. If it weren't for how densely decorated this cake is I would've had to remake it. Lots of pock marks and stretch marks. The boys are made from gumpaste. All else is fondant.
Baby Boy Shower Cake
Mommy and Daddy are lifeguards and swim teachers. Daddy wears the red lifeguard shorts so I thought baby should too. Fondant clothing. Gumpaste flowers, lid, booties and bow. 8" square cake, 3 layers, lemon w/ lemon BC filling. Design from Sugarshack's Boxes and Bows tutorial DVD.
Jaguars Groom's Cake
9" round, two layers, torted. Last minute cake done for a Jaguar's fan. Helmet is RKT and MMF fondant. I shaped the face guard pieces around a coffee cup and allowed to dry. Yellow cake with vanilla BC covered in MMF.
Thank You Cake
A last minute cake done for my mother in law who had a lunch thanking everyone who helped her move. Inspired by a Mike Mc Carey cake (of Mike's Amazing Cakes). Strawberry cake with vanilla buttercream, BC with MMF accents and flowers. 10" oval.
Twilight Sweet 16 Cake
Done for a Twilight themed surprise birthday party. Everything made from sugar. Apple is RKT covered w/ MMF & randomly dusted with a bit of Chestnut petal dust for shading. Chocolate cake w/ chocolate BC filling and covered w/ MMF. 6" over 9", tiers are three layers each. Chess pieces and flower are gumpaste, ribbon is fondant.
High Heel Shoe Cake
Thanks to bobwonderbuns of CC fame for her guidance with this cake. I don't know any plastic fabricators so I made the support myself with some wood. I took pics along the way and will include them. PM me if I can be of further help or guidance. Things I learned: don't foil cover your cake board (in this case the wood), use cardboard. Cake slid on foil causing the large heel area. And/or use foam core glued on the incline (make it food safe...of course) so you can dowel that area of cake. Everything else pretty much explained in pics. Heel is a dowel covered in RKT, choc cake (dense recipe), MMF hand painted w/ paste color mixed w/ vodka. Don't secure the shoe to the board until you are ready to put cake on it. Decorate it on the board.
Tospy turvy (yep, got Sharon's DVD). I did it with two tiers instead of three. Had a disaster thanks to my dowels not being straight. Had to repair huge crack in the top tier and added the white fondant top to hold it together (well, that and a prayer). It was morn of pickup with no time to rebake. Chilled it and held and transported just fine. BC but I'd prefer fondant next time with this style. Gumpaste/fondant 50/50 flowers and accents.
Done for my husband's 10 year old cousin who received an award from the school board for academic excellence (well done for someone with two drug addicts for parents and who is being raised by his grandmother). Cake design from Debbie Brown's Easy Party Cakes book. MMF. Worm is fondant w/ a bit of tylose added.
Done for a girl who LOVES leopard print. Chocolate cake, choc ganache and MM fondant. Leopard pattern hand painted (harder than I thought it would be...bigger print next time!). Sprayed some Pam the night before pick up for the shine on the fondant (rub it in a bit). Gumpaste rings and belt buckle. Gumpaste shoes (pattern in CC template gallery). Saw somewhere on here to paint w/ gold luster dust mixed with veg oil. Tried it here, but it doesn't dry and breaks down gumpaste (got absorbed) won't do that again.
Display cake done for a Bar Mitzvah trade show. I wanted to do a cake to match an invitation. I found this one on line and love the pic so did the cake to match. Branches and leaves are gumpaste/fondant 50?50. On a real cake I'd use modeling chocolate instead. Cake was about 20" tall and 8" in diameter. Fondant dusted with petal dust for the color-wash effect.
Bar Mitzvah Cake
Decorated over sytrofoam, this display cake was done for a Bar Mitzvah trade show. Gumpaste Star of David, gumpaste/fondant 50/50 for boy and podium. Fondant scarf and tassels.
Bat Mitvah Cake
This cake was done as a display cake for a Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah trade show. Gumpaste heels (template here on CC). Purse handle is 50/50 fondant gumpaste. Cake decorated over styrofoam (what a pain! give me real cake any day!). Gold luster dust on button and handle rings.
Fairy And Dolphins
As always, inspired by many cakes here on CC. Little girl loves fairies and dolphins at an "Under the Sea" themed party. 50/50 gumpaste and fondant for all characters. Fairy looks like birthday girl and is feeding dolphin grapes because when she gets in the pool she pretends to be a dolphin while her mom throws her grapes.
Baby's In Flower Shower Cake
Inspired by the baby shower flower pot cake here on cc this was supposed to be two pots, etc. It was due in 3 weeks - I thought. Until I got the call at 1:25 pm as I was working on the boy flower mom needed my address to pick up the cake at 4pm! Me: "Today?!?!" Her: "Oh no..didn't I email you???" So, from the oven to their table in 4 1/2 hrs. (hence the settling from being transported so soon and the many unfinished flowers). Thank goodness I had already done many of the sugar flowers. I was so excited about this cake - I demand a redo!!! All sugar flowers and babies. BC w/ fondant rims.
Done for the graduating preschoolers at my son's school. Characters are the teachers. Wanted to practice making them (these are my first, done with Aine2's tutorial). Was short on time (way short! like "cake challenge" rush finish job! whew!) so books are a sloppy. They all loved it!
Done for a friend's daughter who graduated junior high school. It was a last minute order and cake two that day so I didn't have time to let the fondant set up prior to covering the book so it's a bit sloppier than I like. Vase was originally to be a volley ball (she loves volleyball) but it shape-shifted into a hamburger shape so - with no time to rebake a firmer cake - I made it a vase that matches her new bedroom set and added the sugar flower. They loved it!
Done in school colors for my cousin's high school graduation. The sentiment is hers. 50/50 gumpaste/fondant for cap and diploma. Bookmark is fondant.
Gift Box Cake
Birthday cake for a friend of mine. Sentiment on gift tag is from her mother. BC w/ fondant ribbon and top. Flower is silk (last minute order so no time for gumpaste - and, quite honestly, after seeing how that silk flower was treated upon cutting this cake I'm glad I didn't put a sugar flower on it...geeez!_ )
First "topsy turvy". Done for a deserving family. Only girl out of six kids turning 10. Mom couldn't afford a party but I gave them a rock star cake - gratis. Bday girl loves Hannah Montana - hence the color scheme. Ugh...those wires...I know...thicker wires next time. Ends are wrapped w/ floral tape and inserted into straws (wire not touching cake).
