I know nothing about that particular thing but think of it this way:

Would you make a XXXX rated cake to take to a big party at a school?

To me it would be just about the same thing.

It's your call :)

Ai would strongly advise that you DO NOT make this. Golly wogs are extremely racist and offensive images. i'm sure it is not worth the backlash and humiliation you will endure when its seen. You may say you are not racist, but the fact that others will be deeply offended and hurt by it should be a giant red flag to you. if you still decide to do it, just be prepared for the fallout, you can't say nobody didnt tell you.

I had to look up what a golly wog was, apparently it's the equivalent of "black face" here in the USA. Yes they may be a nostalgic doll, but because it's seen as racist you could lose your job over it And don't forget the a big media scandal about a racists "teacher" who  made a racist cake. The Media loves these types of stories to the point where you may get your face plastered everywhere and not be able to get another job until it dies down. The media doesn't care about your views if they're not politically correct (or in line with theirs, lols).

edited for spelling, lol

ASounds to me like she's genuinely wanting to avoid controversy, and is trusting the people here to help her out.

The whole point of her post was to ask because she was concerned. According to what she wrote, she anticipates that she may have to pass on this one.

Some people are truly naive about what others may deem offensive. Surely you of all people could have found a kinder voice of caution. If not, you need only look at the posts above you.

AI think the question of who the client is also needs to be asked. If it's for a black person who collects them (and there are people who do), then to me it would not be a problem. But for every other circumstance I would shy away. In fact, If you feel uncomfortable ...and it sounds like you do...you might just play it safe and back off regardless. You were wise to ask.

The OP posted a legitimate question because she was concerned and she needed guidance. She received plenty of advise before you posted. Your post is rude, antagonistic, and completely un-called for. I can't believe you could post what you did. You owe nicki54321 an apology!

Golly wog or Wog is a very offensive racial slur. The reason I cant believe that she posted the question or that she doesn't know if she should make this cake or not is because if you simply research the word, all kinds of racially offensive things pop up.

If she doesn't have a problem with it then hey, by all means, make the cake.

AOP, I personally wouldn't do a cake (or anything) I don't feel 100% about. There are other bakers (I'm sure) who could make such a cake with no questions asked. You mentioned that you work at a school. Do bear in mind that this is the social media era. Any questionable behavior outside of work can surely reach your workplace. I truly doubt that this cake is worth the hassle that may follow. Just something to consider.

People come to Cake Central to ask all kinds of questions all the time about things that they could get answers to if they just did a Google (or other) search, but they don't. They want to hear directly from their colleagues, who understand the choices cakers have to make. I believe that the OP will not make the cake due to the very good advice she received.

I'll tell you what planet that saying anything at all is punishable......this one. It's immediate and wide reaching.

AIn that same token, there are many people who come on Cake Central and reply to threads before reading the original post. The OP said that people see golliwogs as offensive. She asked if this would affect her reputation as a baker. That isn't something that can be found on Google.

And thanks MB.

Where I live, they're actually pretty commonly bought and loved. If you simply research the word here, you'll get people selling them pop up. I don't know where the OP lives, but maybe it's the same, and she was researching he word by asking here.

And she clearly does have a problem with it, otherwise why would she have asked?

So what are you saying, that I shouldn't give advice? I don't have a right to voice my opinion on whether the OP should make a racist cake? She asked if it would make her seem racist and I said that it would.

I was shocked when I saw the word Golly Wog and when she said in her own words  "i dont know much about the history about golly wogs but know that many people think of them as racist."  pretty much says that she knew that it was offensive too.

You can try and spin it any way you want to. I stand by what I posted whether you feel that it was good advice or not.

You seem to be being difficult just for the sake of it."

Like I said, I stand by what I posted and where I live they are considered racist but to each his own.

It wasn't the advice that was the problem - advice which, incidentally, was almost universally agreed to by most posters on the thread.

The problem was the sarcasm, and the implication of the OP's stupidity, that you used in your first post. Not very cool.

This is not advice.  It is a snide sarcastic remark made to make the OP feel bad about even asking a question.

OP, msbelle21 has given some good solid advice to follow. I personally would not do the cake.  The backlash could have negative consequences as a result - just not worth it.  Sometimes it's just best to say no but you really need to make this decision.

No it wasn't and please don't put words into my mouth. That is how YOU perceived it but it was not MY intention to make her feel bad. I was only making her aware of it's offensiveness.

Again people, the name of this thread is "do I make a golly wog cake" So I'm wrong for saying I cant believe someone would ask this question? REALLY?!?

In this day and age OP, you want to know if you should make a cake that represents a doll in Black face? And I'm being sarcastic J? Ummmmmkay. I feel like making this cake would be wrong on so many levels and if you want to rake me over the coals for saying so then go right ahead. That is my answer and I'm sticking to it.

I, also, was not familiar with the  term Now I know. The OP didn't just ask the question "Should I make this cake?" but also if it might damage her reputation.

You're absolutely right. What the OP wanted to know would not be found on Google.

Enga, you have a tendency to make histrionic posts after a question has been asked and politely and informatively answered. It is wearing.

It's not wearing on you. You love to read my posts, why else would you be here, lol.  I doesn't matter what I would have said, you would have found fault in it.

Golly wog is a racial slur and this thread should be deleted. I am appalled that it was even allowed to be put up. I guess you have to live in Australia or the UK and be of a darker complexion to get the full impact of it's meaning.

I challenge each of you to make this cake and put it on your websites and tell me how well your business goes.

Moderator, I implore you to delete this thread it is racially offensive.
