I'm making a Boston Red Sox cake similar to this one and I need to know how to get my lettering to look like this:

Do I just roll the fondant out with the blue on the bottom and the red on the top and cut it out?

APretty much. It would look like the real thing that way.

Thanks, I really can't think of any other way to do it besides layering the letters but that seems like it may not work if I don't do it just right. I'll be cutting the letters out by hand so this is going to be hard enough anyway.

I'd cut the red and blue from the same template, then smash (roll out thinner w/rolling pin) the blue so it's slightly larger to border/outline the red layer on top.

Yep. It will take awhile, but that's going to give you the realistic look. I'd try what CWR suggests, if it doesn't warp the letters. Try one and see what happens.

AI size my letters in Word and print onto card stock to use as a template, I just make the font a bit smaller for the top color so you can see the border.

Ive never thought to use CW's method, it would definatley save time-or at least card stock & ink if you can pull it off.

I purchased a Cake Cricuit a couple years ago for different fonts and time saving. I'm rearranging/organizing my cake supplies so I can actually get some use out of it, it's good for shading and backgrounds but by the time I pull it out and set it up I can have the letters cut already.

An easier way  would be to print the letters on an edible image sheet, cut them out and then put them on gumpaste and cut out. Blue gumpaste would work better. They would not look as realistic but since your letters are smaller, it wouldn't be so noticeable.

Thanks alot for that idea! You're right, that would be easy! My local grocery store will print it for me for $9.00, it may be worth the money.

Wondering if using the cardstock method for the red would be better and then piping blue frosting around the letters. It's due this weekend. I guess I'd better figure it out soon! I will post a picture when I'm done.
