What is your recipe? I use http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Marshmallow-Fondant/Detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=marshmallow%20fondant&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page&soid=sr_results_p1i1 and it works very well. The only butter/oil/shortening in it is a tiny bit of butter I coat the mixing bowl with to help it not stick.

Hmmm. . .my recipe for marshmallow fondant doesn't call for shortening or butter either. 16 oz Marshmallows, 2 Tbsp. water, 2 lbs (give or take) powdered sugar.  That's it, unless I feel like adding some flavoring.

My first time was with a recipe using shortening and I did not like it. I next tried a recipe without that I found here and it worked wonderfully.
