I have been browsing Cake Central for several months now but just recently joined. This is my first post. I live in Massachusetts and have been baking for my family, friends and neighbors for free for a little while now and I do love it. Just mid year I have become interested in cake decorating. I have taken a couple of Wilton classes, some basic Craftsy classes, I read and practice whatever I can. I plan on taking a Serv Safe course at some point this upcoming year. I would love to start a home business legally for various reasons. I have contacted my town's health department to get all of the steps that I'd have to take to become legit, licensed, permits, etc. and have been told that it is not allowed, period. A move may be in the near future for me anyhow. So, with a legal home baking business being a serious possibility now, I will consider that when deciding to move. Can the home based baking/cake decorating businesses please tell me what city/town you are located in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The best thing to do is to call the town in which you would like to re-locate to see if they allow home baking businesses.  I am in MA, my town allows it because we have sewers and a public water supply.  The next town over, however, has septic tanks and well water and will not allow home based businesses.  I am actually the first and only legal home baker in my town.  I know there are illegal bakers, I just don't know them personally.

AI will contact different towns. There aren't any home bakers that I know of in my area at all. My water is not septic or well water. Thanks for the suggestion.

AHave you looked into renting a commercial kitchen? Some churches with approved kitchens may rent. You may try catering companies to see if they rent out their kitchen or know some that do. I realize that I'm in a different state, but a lady who makes wonderful alcoholic desserts told me she rents a commercial kitchen one day a week to make her cakes she sells at the farmer's market. Hope that will help some!

Thank you craftybanana, those are great ideas! I will definitely check with churches and catering companies this week. I'm hopeful that something will come through sooner rather than later. Thanks again.
