so three recent incidents here:

1. i was in the produce aisle and someone reached in and grabbed some celery directly in front of me to the point that it avalanched onto the floor and my feet--then she said "i'm sorry." i said nothing because it was safer that way.

2.) i'm in an import shop shopping--this chick comes right up to my elbow--i step back because she wants to get by right--she crosses in front of me and stands there looking straight at me not saying anything-- i'm backed into an aisle--i said," so do you want to go this way too"--and i motioned behind me--she says, "no,that's my basket there on the floor if you don't touch anything in there we won't have to fight" i said, "fight?"--she had been cleaning up on the marked downs and i apparently had entered her sacred ground--whoa

3.) then in tj maxx looking at housewares  this chick reaches right in in front of me and grabs this awkward slab of marble that was sitting on a low shelf--i never moved--she replaces it--she finally goes 'oh excuse me'--i said nothing because it was again not safe for words to come out of my mouth at that point.

my concerns:

  • what happened to waiting our turn--this was not the basement at filene's or black friday or supermarket sweep or something
  • and if we are in a big hurry, we used to say "excuse me" before we elbowed someone out of our (much more important) way--didn't we?
  • you're not supposed to look anymore--you're just supposed to silently grab what you want like a two year old? i was absent that day--

dayum--

your thoughts?

Sounds like a scary shopping day.   But I have been finding the same things going on too.  Everyone is in a hurry to go nowhere, everyone is more important than us, how dare we get in their way.  Manners have gone out the window.  It's a sad state of affairs out there.

I was at the pharmacy the other day and as I was leaving one of the ladies that works behind the pharmacy counter was so busy texting and walking that she cut me off  then walked into me.  Hello are you blind?!

Common sense and common courtesy  seem to be almost non existent today.  My mom and I were talking about that just the other day.  Very sad.

And I totally agree that :  being respectful never goes out of season.

Hope everyone who reads this post thinks twice before they go out.   Be nice everyone.

AWell I live in Texas now so I understand keeping your mouth shut!

It baffles me how people can be so rude. I particularly enjoy when it's someone who you know complains about the youth of today being rude.

AI mean it's more dangerous to upset someone here - more chance of getting shot!

People weren't as fake about being nice there - you can say what you want. Here they'll smile in your face and wish you a blessed day and curse you out behind your back.

yes in general it's true except the part about getting shot--and to me it's not exactly fake it's just in the south they do friendly first and up north they do friendly later

i kept quiet because i did not want to be responsible for what i wanted to say to them--i did not want to let that out into the universe--but i thought it real hard :-D

AI find it fake to be nice to someone's face when you don't mean it, especially when they start throwing a blessing in there. I've heard some really nasty comments made behind people's backs here.

I'm sure the gun thing is more of a stereotype than a reality but I don't want to find out the hard way.

AI like to think of these as teachable moments. I out on my sweetest smile and very kindly say something to make them aware that 1) they are being rude 2) there are still people who behave 3) you can say something with kindness.

Situation 1). I'm so sorry. If I'd known you were reaching for the celery, I would have moved for ya. *sweet smile*. My arms are so short I'd never be able to reach over someone. *light hand touch on arm* if you say excuse me, most people will get right outta your way.

Now some people will take that as an opportunity to start a fight. Respond sweetly. "Oh I'm so sorry I didn't mean to be offensive." If they continue, I smile and say "you must be very angry. I hope your day gets better." Then walk away smiling.

little safety tip here.  be aware of your circumstances, your surroundings, and the persons who are invading your space.

It is a common practice for criminals to purposefully create these type of situations to distract you and distress you in order to divert you from their illegal criminal activities.  One of these days you may find your property or person harmed.

Annoyance at one end of the stick and extreme danger at the other.  You can't fix stupid, but you can often step out of the way.

I'm just cracking up about Supermarket Sweep! haha!! I was trying to remember the name of that show just the other day!

Back on subject...it seems like people are like that everywhere now. I can't stand it! It's not too bad here, but drive 60 miles to Charlottesville, VA where the University of Virginia is, and it's a whole different story. People are RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! I go there for Trader Joe's and a couple other stores we don't have here. I'm glad I don't live there. :)

We get the staff that work at the local supermarkets and shops not moving out of the customers' way, and that always blows my mind.

Surely, as a staff member, you move out of the way for the customer to pass by and not require them to dodge of of your way??

Eish!

This is the biggest issue I've seen, people who are simply not aware that other human beings are around them. It's especially bad at Costco when they hand out free samples, navigating Costco on a weekend is equivalent to driving in Manhattan where gas stations are offering free gas every 10 blocks.

yes i mean sometimes you can completely skip lunch at the big box stores if you hit up enough samples  ;)

one of my favorite shopping safety tips is when i first get into my car in the parking lot after shopping--of course i lock my door and with the other hand I am shoving the key in the ignition and getting my car in gear pronto after that i do the seat belt, arrange any packages etc. because if i was approached all i have to do is move my foot to let up on the brake and my car is moving and the 'approacher' is immediately off balance--

myself--i do not carry a purse --i ♥ me some purses-- but i gave them up years ago--and as a result i've never had my purse snatched   ;)

<high five>
