AThey have micheals store in New York not far from Central Park. I have just returned from America and felt we in uk have much better choices for stock and on line than in American shops very limited stock.

Michael's isn't really a good store to get cake decorating stuff, they only carry a very basic line.  I don't live in NYC, so I can't point you to anyone specifically, but I can say that you can't really judge American cake supply stores based off what you see at Michael's/Hobby Lobby/ JoAnn's.

What are you actually looking for in NYC?

Store size, as in square footage, is not what NYC is known for.  (Unless you're talking about Macy's, Saks, Lord&Taylor, Bloomingdales, Tiffany!) But you can find anything you are looking for.  I live outside NYC but am in frequently,  There's no reason to shop NYC for a chain store. You can do that anywhere!

If you are looking for something specific, many of us can point you in the right direction.  And don't forget to pack comfortable walking shoes!!  You will be here pre-Christmas which is the prettiest time of year.

Well you can go to Micahael's or AC Moore those are the two main stores people go to for arts & crafts etc. The big store in NYC for "cake decorating" is NY Cake & Baking and while I personally don't like to shop there as I find their prices to be a bit pricier than my online stores if I need something in a pinch I would definitely go to them, they have practically everything you need for baking and decorating. Here's the info:

N.Y. Cake & Baking Dist.
56 West 22nd Street
Between 5th & 6th Avenues
NY, NY 10010
TEL: (212)675-CAKE

Store Hours
Monday - Saturday 10:00 - 6:00 pm
Closed on Sundays

Hi Special Occasions UK, I don't have any useful info to offer, but just wanted to say I'm super jealous! I've wanted to do this for ages! I won't get there this side of Christmas, but maybe next year.  You should also do a tour of all the superstar bakeries.  There's an Aussie blog called Butter Hearts Sugar which featured a "cake trip" to New York, you should check out: http://butterheartssugar.blogspot.ie/2010/11/new-york_17.html#.Uh_TRjY9TMw.  I've a list of NY cake stores somewhere and if I manage to find it I'll post again.

Bon voyage!

ADon't waste your precious NYC time at shops like Michaels and Joann, they only stock Wilton stuff and it's all overpriced. Crumbs has better cupcakes than Magnolia imo, but expect all the well known places to be completely packed with all the Christmas tourists.TThere's also a place called Juniors near Times Square that does great cheesecake too.

A non cake shopping tip I have is to check out Woodbury Commons if you have the time, it's in New Jersey but they have actual designer outlets as well as all the usual Nike, Ralph Lauren etc.
