Message On Cake, Without Having To Write On Actual Cake?

Does anyone have any cute suggestions for ways to put a message on a cake without having to write on the actual cake? Pictures? I have horrible handwriting so I'm looking for something so I don't risk ruining the cake with my awful writing. I've seen cute banner like things on skewers on Pintrest, has anybody ever used/made those?
AI typically cover my board in fondant and then use alphabet fondant cutters to cut out messages and place them on the board. I have the same problem with writing on a cake. I never like how it looks
How about using ribbon on the b oard? I just found some nice sized HB robbon at a $ store. You could just glue it to the board or wrap it around the cake even.
I have horrible piping/handwriting so I have a letter press, then I either leave it like that or pipe over it.

AI have my sister do it! She has better handwriting than I do haha. If not I use cutters. Edible markers are also easier for me to use than piping.
I've done one of those skewer banners, I used little alphabet stickers I found in the scrapbooking section at Target, they also have little packs of really pretty paper for a dollar that you can make the banner out of.
But usually I type the message I want up in Word, then try it out in a bunch of fonts until I find one I like, then I print it to the scale I want, cut it out and try to use it as a guide on my cake. I often do the writing with a pin, then pipe over it once I'm happy.
AI don't like my handwriting either! I bought tappits just so I wouldn't ruin an otherwise lovely cake with my horrific writing!

Great idea. It would probably have prevented the shrinking-point-size problem with the Leland Awards cake from last year.
I'd try it for this year's Leland Awards cake, but I was planning on photographing the cavity-side of some Ludlow matrices spelling out the words, in the font of my choice (sorry, I don't have a picture handy of what I'm talking about), and then including that image in the sheet of edible printing I have made up for the cake.
