Just got an email from someone saying he thought I should lower my quote by $100 because they are just going to demolish the cake by eating it.

Tell him being eaten is what you are looking for but, it does not mean that you should lower your price

I'm going to use that next time I buy a car.  "You should lower the price because I'm just going to drive it."

To a hairdresser: "Can you charge less? My hair is just going to grow back."

To a hotel: "We're just sleeping.  Room discount?"

If that had been me, my jaw would have dropped.  Is someone really that stupid and cheap???   I would have told him if he wanted cheap, go to Wal-Mart.

AThe customer should have let you know ahead of time that they were planning on eating the cake. It would be appropriate to apply a $100 discount to the order after adding a $150 product consumption surcharge.

Nobody buys a cake to let it just sit there and look pretty. you should charge him more just for saying something stupid like that.

AI sure hope he was just stirring, because otherwise he's just an idiot.

Maybe answer him with "oh that IS the price if you're going to eat it, I charge more if people are buying my edible creations to only decorate their party room". Equally ludicrous statement.

I actually DID have a "customer" call me one time to order a cake for his daughter's birthday.  He said, and I'll never forgot this "It's just for show.  We won't be eating it. Fondant tastes awful."

PS. He is a chef.

PPS  "NO CAKE FOR YOU!!"

That's not nearly the strangest experience I've had with a customer. This guy was nothing compared to the customer I had who never cut into the cake during the whole party because she claimed she  thought it was a dummy.

She'd ordered the cake from me, including flavors, but she wasn't there when I delivered it. The two guys accepting the cake asked how to cut it and I made a dumb joke sort of like I didn't know people actually cut my cakes...but then proceeded to explain how to cut it.  She emailed me the next day that she was very upset that I'd just given her a dummy cake and was horrified that I'd "duped" her into paying so much for something that wasn't even cake. She maintained that her friends who'd accepted the cake had told her it was a dummy because of what I'd said and she claims they never even tried to cut into it to see.  Either she made the whole thing up or they were serving something a lot stronger than cake at that party...

Anyway, she backed off on wanting her money back but told me she hoped I'd learned a lesson about not making jokes when delivering a cake.

I'd reply with

"You're going to eat it? I didn't realize people ate cake at parties."

YES!!!

Just be thankful it was an email. Could you imagine if the person said that during a consult. I know there is NO WAY I would be able to keep my composure. Professionalism would fly out the window at that moment and I would likely be staring mouth agape in shock across the table, then burst into laughter thinking it was a joke.

Some people just have a lot of nerve...I mean...so do you ask for a discount on your groceries just because you are going to eat them? I can't wait to be my own boss and run my bakery...I would seriously be saying these things back at the customer...if only common sense was more common.

Well lets see...then should they make the wedding dress less...Its only going to be worn once???

Oh, and what about dinner out tonight.  I am going to eat it immediately...Should they discount that.??

Crazy People.    I just had a Mom ask me if I was going to make the birthday cake PRETTY....,Wanted to say NO!  I really work hard to make them ugly!!

Don't  lower your price..I am sure you are worth every penny or she wouldn't have come to you in the first place.

Yes, it was so bizarre you couldn't make it up. I was stunned when I got that email. At first I didn't believe her at all and I'm afraid I went on the offense pretty strongly in my reply. After a couple of emails back and forth, I think she may have been telling the truth and they were just so young, inexperienced and must have had a few margaritas. Though I thought she seemed embarrassed in the end, she never backed off from blaming anyone but me about the whole thing.

Wow, people never fail to amaze me with their stupidity. The lady thinking her cake was a dummy is worse than asking for a discount on a cake because it's going to be eaten.

I thought they were just trying to be original on how they asked for a discount. I laughed, they still wouldn't get a discount. But man I see lots of you get mad, maybe I haven't been exposed to enough crazies yet ( knock on wood ).
