Once again, a plain pound cake, served naked (even before he developed mild type-2 diabetes, he was never big on frosting). This is my first non-edible decoration, and what could be more appropriate for a 78th birthday than a 78 RPM record?

The "record" was created in GIMP, from a photograph by Ramon Vasconcellos, and a "Victrola" icon by "Vlademareous," both from Wikimedia Commons. The color laser print was then laminated, with a second copy of just the label printed on label stock and pasted on (so that the record would have a plastic shine, but the label wouldn't), and then the whole thing mounted on a small disposable plastic tumbler, so that only food-safe surfaces would actually touch the cake. The candleholders are probably at least 30 years old, and while they're evidently still made, they're not easy to find.

The cake turned out a bit dry; when the toothpick came out clean at 38 minutes, I should have pulled it immediately, instead of giving it another minute or two. But what's done is done. I keep forgetting how THICK pound cake batter is.

That is great. You have to fix what Dad wants. And bet he loved it.

Fab idea....I just love the themes that people come up with on here for people's ages......I'm trying to persuade the niece to do a H2G2 cake for her dad's 42nd....

Then you'll love what I'll be posting in the middle of June, for my own birthday.

For the record, previous themes I've come up with, goofing (as Alton would say) on the number, have been:

52: For my parents' 52nd wedding anniversary, I gave them a couple $52 restaurant gift cards, concealed in a pack of playing cards.

55: For their 55th wedding anniversary, I put a speed limit sign on their cake.
