I was asked to make a small wedding cake for a relative.

I would like to make it match her dress.  The cake will be iced with a buttercream.  I was thinking of just decorating it with some buttercream scrolls, but I want the scrolls to be sparkly, just like the scroll work on her dress.  I know if I push sugar onto the scrolls it will get onto the background of the cake too and be very messy looking.  Any ideas on how to get the scroll work to look sparkly with elegance and not too difficult to do as well.   I would like to use just buttercream if possible, but I am open to new ideas too.

Thanks!

Just an idea, try to make them out of modeling chocolate and add the sparkle to them before you place it on the cake. Or, use a stencil on a super cold frosted cake to avoid sparkles on the base coat. The Wilton sparkle gel is a good idea but I don't know if it will run down the side of a cake.

Maybe roll some fondant out into the size/shape of scrolls you want, brush one side with a very thin layer of piping gel and sprinkle with a mix of edible glitter and course sugar (silver?)??  Then apply to cake carefully?

IDK, that's a toughie!

Good luck and we'd love to see pics once you figure it out...maybe a tutorial???

Paint it with luster dust mixed with vodka after it is all on the cake

I saw this done at the ICES convention in Reno last year and it was awesome. You use piping gel and dump your luster dust right into it and pipe. She used brush embroidery and piped scrolls that looked just like a wedding gown. She piped in gold, she piped in super pearl, she used some sparkles, etc.   Going to try and post the pic I took of the sample she did. One thing she did say was to use piping gel without agar. I never found that!  I bought a tub from Chef Rubber at the show and unlike Wilton, agar was pretty far down on the list of ingredients. I did not have any trouble with it running.

Debcent - How did it work?  I've been asked to pipe and "open hearts" design on buttercream covered cakes, and they want mainly silver with some random purple and pink metallic hearts worked into the design.  I think this technique is exactly what I need.
