Heres a cake I've just done with the help from comments on my last cake i posted. I used a icing dam but its still not quite right.

she's adorable! and correct!
keep the bulk of the petal thick enough (especially at the wire) but just thin the edges...doesn't work this way for all flowers but will for this one...at least thin the edge enough to obliterate the cutter marks

In the closeups the only thing I would strive for is thinner petals. What I do is roll out my paste thicker in the center to hold the cloth covered wire then cut it out, thin the edges then recut then vein. Really had to struggle whether or not to even mention it.

Thats a great help thank you everyone! I hadnt actually thought of varying the thickness of the petal... I was just rolling out a uniform thickness and cutting then using the ball ended tool on the edges.
I just had a wee play and the bulge hides pretty well at the back if i vein the side that against the worktop when rolling out... Cant wait to make more now!

I havent post anything in ages, but love this thread, Its a very good opportunity to help each other. I almost cried when I looked at my first cakes, I was so proud and happy with them… but I couldn't see what I see now, all those booboos and mistakes, they look awful !!! I just hope that when I come back in a couple of years and look at the cake I did this week, I have the same feeling, because it means that I am getting better and improving, and that is essential.

Just made my third fondant cake. Still need lots of practice and please give me any advice as how to not get discouraged when you have a vision of a cake and the final product doesn't come out exactly like you wanted it to?! TIA
OK...deep breath...I just posted my very first attempt at using modeling chocolate/candy clay. It was really hard not to list everything wrong with it in the description . I feel like I got into the groove of it when I was almost done with the cake. I'd love your feedback!

Thanks, yes, you commented on the right cake. The top is a modeling chocolate plaque with some inlaid elements and some 3d flowers and leaves. The design on the sides are also modeling chocolate (except for the border). It's been a couple of years since I made a petal shaped cake (and this is only my second), I'd forgotten how hard they are to cover smoothly!
Elcee, they are quite a bit more difficult, but it does look good still. And looking at your other cakes you possess very good skill.
@Rodriquez-km, That's a lot of work. I have stayed away from doing those because I don't want to make all them disc and match them up etc. lol. Overall it is a nice cake. The disc should be a little bit more lined up. Will give it a cleaner look.
AI have been reading along and agreeing with nearly all the comments. I only have access to a smart phone which won't let me comment on the photos, but if anyone has time I would love to have my avatar picture done. it is the cake I am most proud of so far in my career, but I know there are any number of things that could be improved upon, thanks
Ok I am putting my big girl panties on and will join in on the fun. I am no where near most of your levels. I honestly prefer to do cupcakes over cakes but my hubby thinks I need to expand my horizons.

Cake Club... Love those lillies.. They are beautiful. The bottom tier looks very smooth as well. From the pics I could not tell what they were sitting on. Was that on top of a cake? You may try adding some leaves to cover up or fill in the space. You could also bring the flowers in a little tighter. Practice of the pressure of the bag when your writing as well, When I started doing that I had the same problem. My instructor taught us not to fill the bag all the way, just about 1/2 way so we get a better control of pressure. AND for the heart I would try making a chocolate heart and after it dries adding the initials. Will give it a smoother look.

It was so frustrating trying to get it smooth...my eyes go straight to the folds. Grr. Anyway, I was....satisfied enough with this, since it was just practice. But I was disappointed it didn't live up to the inspiration photo. What can I do better?
Wow, justdesserts, your very hard on yourself. Aside from a little lumpiness in the fondant of the top tier its a beautifully done cake. Remember other cakes are for exactly that, Inspiration. Its very hard to copy exactly another cake. Even my own designs never come out quite the same when I copy it.

now i like it just fine as is --you're asking what you can do better so--if you made it again right away it would be better --a problem with hobby and occassional bakers is --it's just like how we loose a lot over summer vacation--too much time in between creations/studies

Ok prompted from the customer not seeming excited at pick up--I submit my first cake to Peer Review Cake Club! It was a last min order and they wanted it a bit small. The Birthday boy was a retired Eye Doctor (not sure how to spell the proper term) lol and currently a Farmer-cows specifically. The Barn was a last min addition and a bit sloppy but I seem to feel that I need advice as to make my cakes go from "ok" to "awesome"! I appreciate all critiques! =-)

That's adorable. A lot more than they would have gotten from me. You never know what kind of stress a customer is under when they pick a cake up. This is a very busy time of year for all, she may have just had a fight with her boss or is facing a dizzying list of stuff to do for Easter. If she paid for the cake - she accpts what you made for her. It's not you, it's her.
Cake Club.. The design is very cute. The corners of the cake could be sharper, try chilling the cake before placing the fondant. I was not especially fond of the glasses they did look out of place, I would have put eye glasses on the cows, make it a bit more whimsical. I know it was all last minute and that can sometimes be harder on the design. I think the barn would have been better sitting in the middle of the cake as opposed to toward the back. Was it just 1 sided? But still a great cake.

Thanks Auntginn--if you look at the other pics the cows do have glasses (just small wire ones) The larger glasses were done in a haste as I realized you could barely see the glasses on the cow! lol And Yes the barn was just one sided (that's why I opted for the back of the cake!) LOL
Yes, I saw them on another post. The cows are very cute, I would have put dark glasses on them. I guess I just like that kinda stuff tho.

Debbie, Very cute. Well done from what I can see. I just got a new monitor and things looks different from the previous one, even tho I have adjusted it. Do I see a little bit of bulging from the bottom tier? I can tell if that's what it is or your fondant coloring. Great cake.
Have not posted for review, I've been trying to figure out to post to this site and can't figure it out. Can somebody please explain it to me. I just realize I haven't posted any new pics since the change so its been awhile.
Never mind, I got it. Guess when you haven't done it in a while you forget. Anyway, Made this for a birthday. Mother chose colors and design and provided the figures. This was my 1st time making pillow cakes, I really enjoyed it.
