I've done some research on quilting and I'm still stuck on how to do it. This will be my first time and I'd like to get a similar look to this cake. What's the easiest way to get a great look for a beginner? Also this cake appears that it may be buttercream but I'm not positive. I can go either way with this cake, is it easier to quilt on buttercream or fondant?

Thanks for any advice.

i really like the two toned look here it sets the quilting off in an eye appealing way

some people use those diamond shaped cutters

in which case to start you would have for ex, an 8" cake on an 8" board

so you can get the cutter up to it without being prevented by hitting the larger board

then place it on the larger board after marking it

or some people use a ruler

fondant or buttercream either one--they are just different not one easier i don't think

fondant you wanna get it impressed right after covering of course so it will still be accepting of the marks--you don't want it to 'crust' up on you

oh and just kinda measure it out all the way around first without touching it so you see how much 'play' you have where the end one meets up with the beginning one--plan out the seam in the back so you know where you can can tweak in advance

I didn't have time to purchase the cutters for an order.  Instead, I made myself a template.

I first the cake so I would know the exact dimensions.  I then determined how big the diamond had to be.  I use publisher to make a sheet of 1" diamonds (that's what I needed for my cake). I printed the sheet and cut the angle (cut along the path of diamonds).  Then, I lined the bottom of the cardstock template with the cake board. I used my quilting tool to trace along the path.  Easy!

Thanks for the tips!! Delicious Desserts I ended up using your method! I bought some diamond cutters but wasn't having much luck so I started over with the diamond sheet. Worked great! Here is my final result.*

The 2-tier is fondant and the smash is BC. Not too bad :-)
