AYep nanny, just plonk the nail in the middle. Let it sink to the bottom. When the cake is baked and turned out of the tin, pull it out. Any hole left can be covered in buttercream.

Hi All,

So i tried out the weighted technique to see if it would help with the dreaded bulge. It was definitely better :). I think I rolled the paste a little too thin so there is a slight mark, but nothing compared to any of my other cakes.

Thanks so much for the advice. :-D

AAh not been here for a few days and had a lot to catch up in. Now let's see if I can remember everything because I'm sooooo tired...

Lovely cakes Kelsey I particularly like the painting one. I saw it in fb yesterday was it? Perfect for an 11 year old.

Lovely castle cake too tiddy, looks big! Made me giggle thinking of what was under the turrets though.

Jo your cupcakes look great (was it Jo? I hope so!)

Jean little Ellie is really really cute. I like the Rose red cheeks, looks like fun has been had!

Maisie hope your Grandad is better now?

What else was there? Oh kustard your cakes looks great, very smooth sides this time.

Whoever was asking if they could email someone their pics to post on here because they can't upload photos, I'm happy to do it for you.

I've been so busy with work I've not had much time for baking but made my own peanut butter cups yesterday and some coconut cups and they are yum! I really need to make a start on my Vegas cake though to give some of the things time to dry. Just need to find time :(

So cute Kuushi....enjoy it while it lasts...I can't enthuse the 10 year old nephew like I did when he was younger :( His 13 year old sister needs no encouragement though :D

Ok, let's see if I can get this to work. Here are some photos that Ruth (Spireite) asked me to upload for her along with some information about each photo (I hope that was what you wanted me to do Ruth?). I might have to do it in 2 lots...

"The Noel cake was Rich fruit  with marzipan and RI and my first attempt at properly covering in RI and piping with it, not as neat as I would have liked but my parents enjoyed their Christmas cake.

The small hexagonal 6" rich fruit was covered in SP...I was playing with my new stencil and gold lustre.

The 2 tier Christening cake was for my Goddaughter.  10" chocolate with 7" vanilla with Blackberry jam buttercream.  I'm still cautious about piping with RI so got a ribbon printed with her name on.  It was June and seemed to be the hottest day of the year and the ganache wouldn't set, and the SP wouldn't smooth"

More photos from Ruth...

"The Tardis console was all chocolate sponge covered in SP.  My husband asked for a chocolate cake with Smarties on the top, so that's what I made. With a sherbert time rotor as well.   Although when I borrowed Patrick Troughton and the Dalek form my nephew there seemed to be a scale problem :)

The 80th cake  was an 8" hexagon rich fruit covered in sugarpaste...(no marzipan) for my husband's Auntie...and a cautious attempt at piping with RI directly onto the side of the cake.

The board game was a 12" chocolate covered in ganache and SP for my school friend's 40th last month.  It was the Sheffield Shares board game (shown in the background), a property trading style game, similar to monopoly that we always played as teenagers .  Again the ganache wouldn't set, and the SP wouldn't smooth  (this always seems to happen on my big 'important' cakes!)  and I couldn't think how to do the map in the middle of the board.  I think in future an essence of; rather than a direct replication might be an easier task!!!  This was the biggest project I've attempted so far."

Hope that's all OK Ruth?

AOooh Siany I forgot, are you at Cake Camp?! Soo jealous!! What's Zoe Clark like, would love to do a class with her! Beautiful cake by the way, love the windmills! Owch re Mayans hand though, nasty, I hope she's ok!

Nanny, Hope you had a lovely day today, all sounds yummy! For Cake Lace to stiffen up (how long until there's innuendo about that comment? LOL!) I think you have to use the pearl mixes as it sets harder. I think there's a tutorial about the butterflies somewhere?

Lovely cake Kustard! Glad the weighting worked! Have you tried ganache for your outer coat? If not that may help too, but it looks great :)

Great cakes Spireite!

Wow Kathy, that's amazing! I saw something about those on the news, but just wow, it looks stunning!

I've had a good day, wedding consultation this lunchtime, then gardening this afternoon as it was looking like a right tip! Had a good 'chopping down' session and planted some pansies to hopefully fill some of the gaps! Now sat curled on the sofa watching the Goonies, and about to book tickets to go and see Ghostbusters at the cinema on Weds, can't wait!!

Kathy, I saw these at the end of August...fabulous sight...very moving...now I want to go again to see it fully filled out. I was going to buy one but I looked on the website yesterday and they've sold out...so hopefully will have raised lots for the relevant charities.

ASpierite - they now almost completely fill the moat. They're still planting them until 11th November but there is not a lot of room left. There were thousands of people up there and that's not an exaggeration. It took us ages to get around. It was a very moving experience. Kathy

AHi Nanny, sorry yes I meant the lace mixture. The normal white lace mix will always stay floppy, but the pearlised lace mix sets quite a bit firmer. I've not tried butterflies as I don't have the mat (yet..........) but I got a pot of the silver mix last year and it definitely sets stiffer so I assume the pearlised white is the same.

Hi Jo! Lovely cake, no wonder she got upset! Have a lovely anniversary on Wednesday :) I'm very '80s old school, love all the movies and sadly most of the music too LOL

Wow Siany that looks amazing! So Mayen was ok to teach? So pleased it wasn't cancelled, look forward to hearing all about it tomorrow ;)

Well I'm off to bed, night all! Xx

AMorning, oops I may have ordered the pearlised mix now Mel, so naughty of me, well there's no point in having the mat if I don't have the correct mix is there?

Siany, that cake is so good, what's the structure of it?

AMorning

Thanks Mel :-) Yes I suppose I'm a late eighties early nineties girl at heart, my works Xmas do is 80's theme so I'm excited to get all dresses up - I'm sure there will be tons of Madonna's there lol !

Siany wow how amazing is that cake !

It's the week I am finally covering for my boss so let's hope whilst she's away I don't fluff it up too much !

I'm telling my friends and family that I'm off cakes for a bit now and not to ask me, it's getting to a point where I'm spending most of my very little spare time doing them for just a favour and although I was happy to help at first and extend my knowledge I know need a break to re - evaluate where I go next. I still have a couple that I have promised to do so I will do those but other than that I'm done till the new year !

Have a good monday all ;-)

AHi Barbara, I've got the pearlised white, soft silver and soft gold premix cake lace and they all stay stiff. I read that if you want any of the premises a bit more flexible you can put some ordinary cake lace onto the premix after the first bake and put it back in the oven. However if you are doing butterflies you won't want flexibility, I'm guessing.
