I would say that for a Criso-based buttercream, it definitely does its job well. It was smooth and tasted palatable after a quick dash of salt (as recommended by another user). My hunt for my favourite buttercream still continues though! The simple and undeniable difference between real butter and shortening is that butter, when it hits your tongue, just melts like a dream! This on the other hand, takes a little more effort. All things considered, I will probably use this recipe again in the future for something like brownies but not something as delicate as a cupcake.
