Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Banana sheet cake gets its soft texture from applesauce, buttermilk, and brown sugar. Then it's topped with sweet cream cheese frosting. We think this cake would be perfect for breakfast or dessert.

This is an awesome banana cake recipe that my family dearly loves. I changed a few ingredients from the original recipe. Don't be surprised if you need to bake it a little longer than directed. II usually have to bake it about 50 minutes. Enjoy!


  • 3/4 cup Butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups Sugar
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups Bananas
  • 1/2 cup Applesauce
  • 1 1/8 cups Buttermilk or Sour Milk
  • 3 cups AP Flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup Butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • 4 cups Powdered Sugar


Cream butter and sugars, add eggs, vanilla, bananas and applesauce. Mix in dry ingredients and then add buttermilk. Beat at medium speed for 3 minutes. Pour into prepared 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool on wire rack, frost. For Cream Cheese frosti Cream together cream cheese and butter. Add vanilla and lemon juice. Gradually add powdered sugar. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
