Chocolate Spice Cake

I love the combination of pumpkin and chocolate. I came up with this and frosted it with brown sugar buttercream. Enjoy!


  • 1 chocolate cake mix (I used Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 small pkg. instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin/pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg


  1. Mix cake mix, sugar, flour and pudding mix together. Add pumpkin, sour cream, oil and eggs and blend with mixer until well combined. Add cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Bake at 325 until done.
    (I like cinnamon and used more like 2 tbsp.)

Tried this cake and loved it. Thanks for the experiment. I used Simply Smooth White Buttercream to ice the cake (recipe also on this site). I thought it was a nice pair since it is a light, fluffy, tasty (made with some whipping cream) icing with a dense moist cake. I made it for my mom to take to a Christmas party and she said it was the hit of the evening. (Even my teenage boys liked it.) Give it a try for the holidays.
