Whipped Chocolate Frosting

Wonderful rich and creamy frosting.


  • 1 lb. vegetable shortening
  • 1 kg. icing sugar
  • 5 tbsp. cold water
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sifted cocoa powder


  1. Using the paddle attachment (not the wire whisk), cream shortening & vanilla together.
    Add water and then 1/2 of the sugar. Blend on low until nearly smooth.
    Sift the cocoa powder and the remaining sugar together and add to the bowl.
    Blend until smooth.
    Turn the mixer up on ‘high’ and whip for about 20-30 seconds. It will be very fluffy and smooth.
    *Don’t mix it longer that this though, because it will be very soft and difficult to use under fondant.

One kg is 2.2 lbs. A 2 lb bag of confectioners (AKA powdered or icing) sugar should work, maybe cut back just a tad on the water to begin with.

And yes icing sugar (AKA powdered or confectioners) sugar is available in the grocery store, usually along side the regular granulated sugar on the baking aisle.

I haven't tried this recipe, but I have a theory that anything made with cocoa powder and enough sugar has to be good!
