The sides are fondant. I made up the colors and rolled out the fondants to 1/4 inch thick and cut into thin strips. Then I arranged the strips in alternating colors next to each other. I used a rolling pin to roll them out thinly so the fondant was large enough to cover the cake surface, then applied it to the cake. By rolling the strips close to each other, the strips will stick together.
