virginia58, it was actually 3 9" round layers on the bottom and a 1/2 soccer ball dome pan on top. Stacked and carved into the helmet shape.

I also used dowel rods and cake boards for support. I did a practice cake before hand, didn't use them and the cake collapsed! Good luck to you!

I used half fondant/gum paste mixture with color. I originally rolled out all the parts several days in advance to harden, the 2 "U" shapes for the top and bottom of the face mask and the 4 smaller spokes. For support, I inserted small toothpicks in the 4 spokes. I let all the pieces harden, but the bottom "U" cracked when trying to attach the spokes with toothpics. It worked better with the bottom

(continued)...the pieces attached with the toothpicks easier when the bottom "U" was soft, so I remade it. I also rolled out a piece to outline the helmet opening. I put this on first, but didn't harden.I also colored some royal icing the same color and used it to "glue" all the pieces to eachother. For extra support. I inserted toothpicks underneath the part of the face mask and into the cake. Then covered the toothpicks with black icing to hide them. I hope that helps...it is hard to describe in ...
