Opa Sigi's Birthday Cake

My husband's grandfather broke his leg a few weeks ago and will be celebrating his 77th birthday in the hospital on thursday. i'm making him a black forest cherry torte decorated with marzipan meds. we're going to work with the nurses and ask them to tell opa that he's up for an x-ray or something so they can wheel him out of the room and into his surprise birthday party in the visitor's lounge :) we're sneaky like that.

thanks! i painted gel colors onto the marzipan directly instead of kneading the color into it :) makes for a shiny finish and you only color what you need, so at the end of the day you're not stuck with odd little pieces of leftover colored marzipan ;)
