Polka Dot Fun For 1St Birthday

Polka Dot Fun For 1St Birthday on Cake Central

I did this cake for a friend's daughter's 1st birthday...this is the 1st 2 tier cake I've made...did buttercream icing and fondant for the dots. Had a bit of trouble with the fondant coloring bleeding onto the cake--I don't know if this is usually a probelem when it's hot and humid?? Maybe I need a new recipe? Had anyone else had this problem? Anyways, it was a fun experiment...it's only my 2nd cake I've made for someone outside of family, and my first time with fondant, so I was happy with the results.

Very cute cake! I'm partial to Marshmallow fondant as it tastes better, maybe try that next time and there is a recipe on this site.

Actually, I did make & color the fondant a day ahead, but I'm wondering if it was the recipe. This one used corn syrup, powdered sugar, shortening, vanilla & salt. Does anyone have a different recipe that they've had better success with?

I LOVE this cake!! What size are your layers? This is exactly what I have been picturing for a cake I want to do - do you mind if I use your cake as inspiration?

Thanks for the compliment! I used quite a few cakes from this site to get my creative juices going, so feel free to do the same! I used a 6 and 8 inch pan, and made 2 enhanced cake mix recipes, splitting each mix between the 6 and 8 inch pan...I also made 7 or 8 cupcakes with the batter from the 2nd mix...and I did a raspberry filling between the layers.

it's good the color your fondant a day ahead. that way it won't be so fresh. that might have been the reason it bled onto the cake.
