Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Hat Cake With Baby Converse

The hat is made from half of a 6 in ball pan and a 6in layer. I used swiss meringue buttercream under the fondant.

The brim of the hat was made a few days ahead and it's made out of gumpaste. I used my son's baseball hat to trace the shape onto parchment. I used the parchment to cut my gum paste. I then wrapped the hat with plastic wrap and placed the gumpaste brim on the hat to dry.

I also made the shoes out of gum paste a few days in advance. I found a tutorial and printout stencils on pinterest.

To do the seems and stitching, I measured around my cake and divided by six. I made a mark at each measurement and used bakers twine to make small indent lines. Once I was done I went back over the lines with my icing smoother to indent them a little more. A simple ruler would work for this but I didn't have one. I then just added the stitching on either side with the fondant stitch tool. The little air holes that go on top of the hat are made by rolling out the fondant and I used the opening of an icing tip to cut out the circles. I then took the end of a paintbrush to make the holes in the center and used a pointed tool to make little indentations around the circle to mimic the stitching. Just attached them with a little water.

For the logo, I printed an image off my computer, cut it out, layer it over my rolled out gumpaste, and used an exacto knife to cut it out.

The brim is simple attached by pressing it into the cake and I added a toothpick into the cakd right underneath the center of the brim for extra support. I then cut a very thin piece of black fondant to lay over the seam and cover any gaps.

I hope you like it and found this helpful!
