Venetian Theme Cake

I was delighted to be asked by #cakemastersmagazine in July 2014, to partake in a magazine feature called "around the world in 40 cakes" this feature was in the September 2014 issue ( http://www.cakemasters.co.uk/product/october-2014-issue/ ) along with a tutorial on how I made the gold and white mask.

The top mask, I was inspired to do after seeing a decoupage mask in Venice. I had painted Canaletto's "Grande Canal" using cocoa butter. The rest of the cake is a combination of handpainting the architecture and Royal icing texting and airbrushing. The grapes and leaves are made from gum paste (sugar paste)

Wait, hold on... you painted all those little windows and diamond accents?

Wow. How long did it take, and was this real cake or dummies? I only ask, because it must have taken time, and I am interested how real cake would have stayed fresh. I would love to do more detailed work, but as a hobby baker, I have time constraints working around my full time job. I would love to be even half this good.

Hi gscout, yes these are royal iced dummies. The building artwork took a day. I do paint onto Cakes as well, if you look at the other threw tier cake with hand painted roses, that's three tiers of chocolate cake. Also painted in a day. X

Thank you for your kind words to both of you x
