I wanted to design a cake with a 1920’s theme for quite some time but never had the occasion. Needless to say, I was thrilled a client contacted me in need of such a cake for her Great Gatsby themed murder mystery party. I am a 20’s buff and quite the fan of the Art Deco movement. I knew immediately I wanted to incorporate Art Deco design elements in this cake. In the end, I wound up with what I call a Gatsby, meets flapper, meets The Chrysler building look. I love the architectural feel of the design elements incorporated in this look. Over all I have to say I was very pleased with the outcome, as was my client. And what flapper look would be complete without a little fringe and a few feathers? Thanks to her for allowing me to create something to represent a decade that is so close to my heart! Hopefully it was the bee’s knees and cat’s meow at the party! The cake was iced in butter-cream then covered in black fondant with gray fondant details that were hand brushed with silver luster dust. Front plaque was made using gum-paste.
