This wasn't the first time I made a cake but it WAS the first time I was asked to make a cake for a coworker to give to his daughter!!! This was a checkerboard cake made of a french vanilla cake and a red velvet cake, iced with a buttercream icing. I cut all the decorations (butterflies, flowers & caterpillars) from fondant. I had an idea to give the cake more of a dimensional feel to it by making it look like some of the butterflies were flying around the basket (attached by wiring-inserted into cake).
