Chocolate Butterflies

Chocolate Butterflies on Cake Central

My youngest daughter's 2nd birthday cake For those intersted in how to make the butterflies: I got the pattern out of a cookbook called "Hello, Cupcake". It's just a matter of making a template for the wings (you have to do each wing seperately). Working on a tray or cutting board, something you can pick up and move, you place the template under a piece of wax paper, then trace over the outline with chocolate (milk, dark, whatever), then right away fill in the middle with the orange. Pick up the board, or whatever, and give it a little tap on the counter, just to level out the colors. The run a toothpick lightly through from the outside edge towards the middle to "feather" the colors together. Sprinkle a little bit of white nonpareils (I think that's how it's spelled!) then place them in the fridge to set.

After the wings are set, I found small things to use as supports so that the wings would sit in a flying position (I think I used mini marshmallows, but I don't remember for sure) then I piped a chocolate body in the middle between 2 wings and returned it to the fridge to set (doing all this still on wax paper on a board or tray) They do it differently in the cookbook, the bodies are just made out of frosting, but I liked the idea of being able to just place my whole butterfly somewhere, then if I needed to move it I could. Plus I figured they'd stay together better that way.

I hope I explained it well enough. The actual cookbook has pictures to make it make more sense!
