I have to explain this one a bit! This was for my nephew's first birthday party...Dad is an artist and designed the invitations/party theme himself. It was supposed to be kind of abstract, like kids took markers or paint and doodled on everything. I took the patterns/colors from the invitations and replicated them on the cake -- the borders are fondant balls and I painted on the cake using icing colors mixed with vanilla extract. It was my first time using this technique and I had so much fun! My nephew's name on the top is 'Avin', the letters were supposed to be a little crooked and offset. This is yellow cake with vanilla buttercream and MMF. I told them I was glad it was supposed to look like a kid drew on it, because I 'draw' about as well as a kid! This was a very different cake for me (and thus quite a challenge!), but I'm really happy with how it turned out.
