Tropical 30Th Birthday Cake

Tropical 30Th Birthday Cake on Cake Central

i made this cake for a friend's 30th birthday. she said her boyfriend was taking her on a tropical vacation to celebrate, so this is what i came up with. it's marble cake, filled with chocolate cheesecake filling and frosted in buttercream. the flowers and shells are gumpaste. i have no idea why i chose an orange cake board, i think i originally had a sunset scene in mind, but it never happened. i am a critique subgroup member and welcome all comments.

Critique subgroup member. I love the smooth BC and your bottom border. The desgin seems a bit disjointed when putting together pansies, orange board, turquoise together with the beach shells and a tropical vacation. Sorry just didn't seem thought out enough and a bit more like you designed as you went along.......

continued: Okay "my bad"! I just relooked at your flowers and I guess I'm slow cuz they are hibiscus and not pansies. So I don't know my flowers. However, I would like more of everthing so it seems on purpose and not designing as you go......again - sorry Jescapades. I'm a ditz.

Critique Subgroup Member: Sounds delicious! :) I like how you did the coloring on the shells. I would've liked to see the blue wave border duplicated on the top tier to balance it out. Your bottom border is really nice as are your flowers.

critique subgroup member: Your shells and flowers are amazing. I thought the flowers might be silk until I read the description. I see a few rough edges to the BC, but they take nothing away from this cake. I am not crazy about the color of the board (which you mentioned.) Maybe I would have covered it with graham cracker crumbs/brown sugar sand ditching the sunset idea. I think a bigger topper would look good too....maybe a couple of shells along with the flowers. Overall, it is very nice.

Critique subgroup member: I love that bottom border! very nicely piped! The shells are great, but I think they are a bit large in comparison to the flowers? The flowers are awesome! I also think that maybe a small border around the tops, they seem to be missing something?? overall, very pretty cake!

Critique subgroup member: beautiful cake. I would have made the bottom border blue as well, as I think dark starts from the bottom and fades to lighter colors as you go up. I love your flowers and shells- fabulous work.

Critique subgroup member: First off, great smoothing job on the bc!!! The flowers are so pretty and delicate looking. Continuing the border on the top edge of the cake would keep the rest of the cake from getting lost. The top tier is a bit off center BUT.......as far as beach themed colors, you captured that very well.

Critique group member: Cute! I love you hibiscuses (they are my favorite type of flower)!Critique wise I see some inconsistencys in the BC, also is it just me or is are the tiers both slighty too far to the left?I also think that I would have been better to have done the whole cake in the bottem border (which is fabulous by the way) and I agree with slly that you should have done the darkest border at the bottem and lightened as you went up (for instance you could start off with the darkest blue do that

cont. do the bottom border and then as you go up each tier add a lmore white icing that way it's all is the same color tone).Another thing that bugs me is scale the shells are huge amd the flowers are tiny, perhaps it would have been better to do the shells about the same size as the flowers. Also I think a nice touch for the top would ahve been two larger hibiscuses proped up. Sorry to be so long!

Critique Subgroup Member: Maybe it's just the photo but the tiers don't look very well centered. The BC looks a little rushed but the borders are perfect! I agree that it's missing something without the other two borders. You would have better served with a different color board or tried to tie it in with sugar or graham crumbs. Over all the cake looks good. I do like the theme and your work toward it. the shells and flowers are great! The writing is very well done as well. I like this cake a lot!

Critique Subgroup Member: I'm sorry, but this cake seems so disjointed -- like others have said, big shells, little flowers, inconsistency in borders; insufficient topper. Your buttercream is nice and smooth and the shells and flowers are lovely. It's still pretty and I'm sure your friend loved it!
