This was my first try at a topsy cake for practice. I was happy with it up until the top layer crumbled off and I almost cut the tip of my finger off. It really sagged over night, shoulda taken a picture last night when I finished. All fondant. (Disclaimer: Contains no blood bi-products! LOL)
That's grea! We can see what it was before it "wrinkled". I call those my shar pei cakes, When I made my first topsy turvy (and my last with that method anyway) my top edge fell, but it was because I had not carved smoothly enough and had some overhang. BAD. ..............lost the entire middle tier 30 min. before delivery............I turned it into a hat!
It's really cute. The cut outs are great.
Great job! My first topsy-turvy also fell the following day. Good luck to us both next time! :)
I love the colors on this. As far as the sagging goes...what type of cake did you use? I have been wanting to do a cake like this, but not sure what type of cake to use.
Thanks everyone! I used 10-9-8 & 8-7-6, Betty crocker mixes. The chocolate is what caused it to sag, that's the layer that crumbled up top, choc.is always so moist. I'll have to use more dowels next time.
For a first attempt this is great and thank goodness you didn't contaminant anyone with your blood bi-products LOL
