I've got a small wedding cake coming up and I'm trying to find out the best way to color white (Wilton Brand) fondant. The bride wants a pale sky blue color. I've only ever worked with white fondant before. Do I mix food coloring into it, or paint it, or what?
Quite often you just mix a bit of wilton paste color in and the wilton fondant takes color nicely. Does the bride know that wilton's fondant really does not taste good at all? It is a great fondant to learn with but it has a very chemical taste to it.
I use a food processor.Break the fondant into chunks, add your color, process until crumbly..............then Knead it until its uniform.
Good idea with the food processor.
I don't even think Wiltons is good to practice with.... the texture is all gummy and wierd.... or maybe I bought a bad batch.
I use Nic Lodge's method, knead your white fondant till smooth, pull off a small ball of fondant, say a large steelie marble size, color it several shades darker than what you want the finished color to be, knead that colored ball into the white until it is thoroughly incorporated. You will notice as you pull and push the colored ball into the white it will begin to look marbelized, which is really pretty on a cake just that way. Or keep kneading until it is even and the color you are looking for. You can always pinch off another ball, color it and add it to the first batch if it isn't dark enough. Just remember the rule about being able to make it darker, but not being able to make it lighter, so go easy on the color at first.
I use petinice which is pretty affordable. I hear satinice is the best but its expensive.
Satin ice is not bad for store bought fondant. I sure wouldn't use Wilton though...if anything, I know its messy, but the mmf is the best. Satin Ice has many colors to choose from.
