Another great tutorial by Katherina Perez, a beautiful fault line, all the rage. (Again, could not post in Tutorials)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxkx8ef6Yrk&feature=youtu.be
The first ones I saw were almost ugly, but I've seen some beauties lately and the one in the video is one of them.
Thanks, Betty. Katherina has a channel and she does many tutorials, all free. Some are as simple as how to frost a smooth cake and apply fondant, but she also have several on modeling. She make the cutest ladies ever, she calls them dolls.
Wow -- I didn't think it was especially great until she added the rest of the ganache. So pretty!!
Has anyone done a fault line? Is it purely preference with ganache or buttercream? Now I don't know if I should do sprinkles or fruit - this one was so elegant!
Also - has anyone done it with a light color frosting?
Looking forward to browsing the rest of her videos!
Thanks!

Here's the fault line cake I made:

@KatyN, sure you can use buttercream! The fault line design is the newest craze and they come in all kinds of different styles. The very first ones I saw, I thought were almost ugly, but have since seen some amazing ones. @ThatCakeDude42, your's is one of them (beautiful)!
Loving these cakes - very interesting. Thanks for posting.
Quick question though.... I watched both tutorials and neither put any supports in (cake boards w/bubble tea straws or dowels). Maybe because both were little 6" cakes?
If you need say, 8-6-8 for servings, it would get heavy. Wouldn't they need some support?
More research answered my own question. Just watched this one - and it uses bubble tea straws.
Alternative technique - all done with frosting from Rosie;s Dessert Spot.
Wonderful creativity from everyone!
To me, this is the same thing as a three layer cake. I would not use any dowels unless it was a very fragile recipe.
Ain't it purty, -K8memphis?! I want to make one too, but we are doing a great job of shedding the extra pounds, AT LAST, and I don't want to put too much temptation in front of us.
i hear yah! and I got the saddlebags to prove it hahaha
no, the way I usually say it is, the saddlebags you have with you always
but my sister and brother-in-law are visiting in September so since I know they’re coming i’ll have to bake them a cake — but the hard part is narrowing it down — agh
If I knew you were comin’ i’da baked a cake, baked a cake...
‘member that one?
Yes, and it is true! I bake a cake for every occasion! Any excuse! My last one was a birthday cake for my neighbor, didn't even taste it, but I had the pleasure of baking and decorating it.
I did make homemade hot dog buns yesterday and had one with a bratwurst (picnic) today....and enjoyed every bite!
I am sooo going to try this! I have two birthdays to bake for coming up this month and they are both going to be fault line cakes. My only concern is support (as mentioned above) and making a mess of my fault line with the buttercream on the top and bottom. Wish me luck! :)
weluvpiggies, if you think about it, the fault cake is a simple, one tiered cake with three layers. The bottom and top layers are just slightly wider than the middle layer. No need for internal support unless you are using an extremely fragile recipe.
Good luck! I can't wait to see how they come out!
Unless you're putting something thick in the fault, doing different size layers isn't really necessary. You can just make the frosting thicker on top and bottom.
