I agreed to make a cake for Tuesday that requires an edible image, and I've never used them before.  How far in advance can I apply the image?  I'd like to leave a buffer in case I have a caketastrophe, so I was hoping to decorate on Sunday afternoon/night.  Since I've read that it should be applied while the frosting is somewhat wet, I was thinking I'd apply when I fill and frost the cake on Sunday and then add the finishing touches Monday night.  I really don't want to have to leave everything to Monday night.

Also, will it be ok to apply more buttercream over the image and highlight certain areas with gold luster dust mixed with vodka or will it cause the image to lift or something?  Does the image crust like the rest of the frosting?  For reference, the image is of a book cover, mostly navy with a red stripe and gold lettering and a gold embossed image.  The cake will be frosted with an American buttercream, half butter/half hi ration shortening.  I'm planning to do the sides in navy with the center of the top in white with navy edges, so hopefully the image blends into the cake but the text and picture will still stand out .
