I have made it with Vitalite once before, and although it was ok, it was a lot softer and "wetter" than with butter.  I'd recommend using extra icing sugar with it, but then obviously that makes it very sweet.  There are other dairy free alternatives out there that I think are a better consistency, but I've not had reason to try.

Many people us all shortening in place of butter in buttercream.  It is more heat resistant and pure white, although not as yummy.  Lots of extra flavoring, including butter flavoring, helps a lot.

I prefer the earth balance soy free buttery sticks. I do half and half with the other half being shortening. Gives a great bright white frosting and takes flavor well (either with extracts or ground up freeze dried fruit). You can also add in diya vegan cream cheese spread if you want that added flavor profile.

You can make icing from aquafaba, chick pea liquid. Vegan, and very tasty.
