Hi all,

This is my first time making a fondant cake. I am making a 3 tier cake(9",6",3"). Something similar to the one in this picture-

I would like to know if its necessary to put boards and dowels under each tier? And if I do, how do i cover the board's edges which will be visible? I am going to put all the decorations but the decorations wont stick directly to the board. Should I fill the gap with blue icing? And then stick the decorations on it?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is necessary to put a board and dowels under each cake, as that is what gives the cake stability and holds it up. Without either of those things, the cake will collapse on itself. An 8" cake should be on an 8" cake board, a 6" on a 6 and so forth. Once you place the decorations, the board won't show. You can use a little water, a very slight amount, or piping gel on the back of the decoration to adhere it to the cake.
