I am baking for a friends wedding in a few weeks. She wants to keep the cost as low as possible so she has chosen white cake with vanilla Swiss buttercream. My question is- is there anything I could add for an extra boost of flavor? I'm making a simple syrup to keep the cakes moist, should I add vanilla to that too?

I add grand marnier to my simple syrup but it's pricey -- there about 10,000 flavored vodkas and all kinds of flavored alcohols -- does wonders to vanilla cake

Yes, indeed one can add vanilla and ANY flavoring to simple syrup. You can also add any and all to icing, & the cake.
