Hi I have to make this cake for 55 guests for a bridal shower. I was thinking of making the bottom an 8" tier with 6" to 8" tall and the top tier a 6" tier with 4" to 5" tall. Will this be enough or should I go with a 10" and a 6"? I really don't like when one tier is much smaller than the next. Than you.
on your extra tall tiers -- if you have a board inside half way up where you can cut twice as many servings then the 8x6 will work if the 8 is 8" tall -- if the bottom tier has no board and is like 6" tall then you are just giving extra large servings that btw don't fit on dessert plates -- because servings are determined by footprint --
so to me an 8" cake 8" tall is a two tier cake right there -- then add on the 6" and you'll have plenty of servings --
Ok good. Thank you ladies. One more thing, does the board in the middle needs to be bit smaller than 8"?
Yes! This is what I just did on Friday. A two tier cake with an 8 inch double barrel on bottom, with a 6 inch on top. Just watch that center board, it will poke through your icing like K8 said above.
I trim my center boards to about 1/4" smaller all the way around.....guess that would be 1/2" smaller in diameter.
Thank you. I will do as you all said.
GIGGLEBOX2014 did you take a picture of your cake? Can you please share it?
I hope gigglebox can post -- and i'll tell yah -- sandrasmiley has a ton of incredible tall tier cakes -- check out her stuff too
You are making me blush, -K8memphis (silly grin). Thank you! Almost all of my cakes have tall tiers, whether or not it was my original intention. For some reason, I bake really tall cakes.
Yes, mine is the chevron and polka dot cake in my pics! It is nothing compared to Sandras cakes, but it was definitely tall and did the trick! She does amazing work!! But I've got a few double barrels in my pics. The blaze and home themed cakes were DB's also.
Gigglebox2014, please don't say that! Your cakes are amazing, we just have different styles and that's how it should be.
