Sps Cake Support System Question Before I Place Order

I will be making a 6,10,14 cake that will look stacked but have flowers between the two cakes. The cakes will be iced in buttercream so I was planning on using a 13" round SPS plate for the top of the 14" cake and a 9" on the 10" cake so that flowers have a hard flat surface and won't damage the frosting or sink in to the top of the cakes. The plates will be completely covered with gum paste tulips and babies breath. Is it ok to use a SPS plate with colums with only 1" difference between the size of the cakes and plates? The cake won't be assembled until we arrive at the venue. I need to place my order soon and was hoping for advice from you wonderful bakers.
1" really isn't a lot of space to work with, especially for gp tulips. I'd worry they won't fit into the space. Are your tiers heights 4"? If so, you'll need to order the multi-piece pillar set. That comes with a 5" pillar and 2, 2' extensions, so that the pillar can be 5", 7" or 9". I generally used the 7" height for tiers separated by flowers. And yes you have to assemble these onsite.
The one thing you may not be visualizing, is that with SPS, the plate only sits on top of the cake when its stacked construction. Otherwise the air space for the flowers is created by the plate sitting above the surface of the cake. With SPS the flowers do not have a hard surface to sit on. You'll need to add a cardboard circle.
Oh wait. You actually asked about putting a 13" plate on a 14" cake. No, generally not, because you're not visualizing this correctly. This system doesn't work like the W system. The Plate needs to be the size of the tier it's supporting (the tier above.)
Leah what I had planned on doing is placing the 13" sps plate on top of the 14" cake and using a 9" styro foam dummy on top of that plate covered with gumpaste flowers on top of that I will place a cake drum with a 10" cake with a 9" sps plate topped with a 5" stryo foam dummy with flowers then the final 6" on a cake drum. Hope that makes since. I am using the stryo foam to not only add the space between the layers but also to arrange the flower. I was hoping to use a 13" on the 14" cake because I didn't want the gum paste flowers to damage the top of the icing on the cake I figured it would create a hard surface for them to rest on but I wasn't sure if there would be enough room on the sides for the columns to insert into the cake. If you don't suggest a 13" would a 12" be ok? Thank you for your help.
