Hello all,

I have been asked to decorate a cake with a "fossil" theme and frankly, my mind is blank...

The cake will be chocolate with chocolate icing, but as for the "fossils"?

What do you experts have to say?

Thanks for helping!

Sandra

I would use gray marbled fondant and take some dinosaur toys and press into them. If you can find play bones (i'm thinking that game operation used to have them) press those into the fondant.

Thanks peg818

I just tried this and it did not work...

the kid does not want bones and dinosaurs but shells and bugs - so I tried several shells form a collection and none of them leave an imprint deep enough in the fondant - I even went to the Museum of Natural History and a toy store to see if they had something better, but no...

Also, I tried it putting imprints on the chocolate icing and also not good, it just stuck to the shells and left suction marks..

Thanks for the idea anyway

Isn't there a play doh set that comes with bugs and shells for molds? If not, how about the candy molds? I know you can buy shells. Don't know about bugs.

What if you put a little cornstarch on the shells before pressing them in?

Here is a website on Trilobites, some of the oldest bug fossils found...Maybe you could replicate one.

Sounds like a ghastly cake icon_eek.gif

Right, I ended up making an ammonite chocolate plaque to put on top of the cake, I managed to make some imprints on the edge of the cake but they did not show up too well, so I used them as markers for the candles.

The kid was really happy with his cake!

Thanks for all the input

As ammonites go, yours is amazing! icon_lol.gif

Glad he liked his cake. It turned out great. Are you glad that one is over with? ha ha.
