I need to place an order for supplies for my friends wedding cake and need some advice.  I found a place that makes custom size cake drums and boards and I'm not sure which size will work best for her design. The cake will look like a stacked cake but the tiers will be elevated using SPS plates and columns and flowers will fill in the space between the layers. I will be using cake drums between the layers and want them to be as close to the cake as possible but still give me enough room to frost each tier. For a 6" cake do you think a 6 1/2" cake drum would give me enough space to frost? I plan on trimming the edges of the boards with rhinestone ribbon that's why I want it as close to the cake as possible. Thank you

Usually one uses a board 2" larger than the size of the cake.   If you don't want the board to show then 1" is used to allow for icing it.   In order to allow for edging the drum after it has been iced I suggest you go with 1& 1/2" larger than the cake.
