-K8memphis - many thanks for all the tips.  I'm going to print this out and place in my "idea" folder.  You are right about doing some practice flowers now.  We live in Georgia, United States and even now the temperatures are in the 90s F with humidity at 90%.  I love the advantage of getting the flowers done in advance.

Hi everyone! All the cakes are beautiful this week.

@me_me1 ‍ that geode cake is incredible and the marbled fondant is so realistic!

@Pastrybaglady ‍ your cakes are so cute! My favorite is the 1st birthday one. May I ask what tip did you use for the "leaves" border on the top of the cake?

@catlharper ‍ I've been craving for sushi since last week. Well done!

@Nana52 ‍ you had quite a busy week! I realy like the elf and mushroom cake!

@Natka81 ‍ simply gorgeous!

This week I made a butterfly cake for my niece. I've just finished it! My picture is not realy good, colors are not showing as prety and "bubbly" as they should!

Pearl oyster cookies:

900x

I saw the idea for these on Tumblr a while ago, and they were so cute I just had to make some for myself! I use Voortman Iced Almonette cookies; you could use whatever scallop-shaped cookie you can find, but I like how the little bit of icing looks on these. The filling is pink vanilla American buttercream and white sixlet pearls. And they are delicious!

With hunting season being upon us, I decided to go a different direction with a cake for our family cookout on Labor Day.  I love all of your cakes, that geode is just gorgeous.  I'm always hesitant to post pics because of all of the talent I see here, but here we are.

@Laetia ‍ I used a wavy rose tip and just kind of wiggled it into a leaf shape trying to make it fall over the edge of the cake.

I was caught a little off guard by FNCC not being initiated by @catlharper ‍ and was wondering what was up.  I got a good chuckle from @me_me1 being impatient and starting it up.  I've been there too, waiting for the post to pop up but then going to bed hoping to find it in the morning instead.

@me_me1 your geode cake is gorgeous!  Well done!  Looking forward to seeing everything else you are creating as well.

@julia1812 ‍ sorry to hear that you are not feeling well.  Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for you.

@Pastrybaglady ‍ your little jungle animals are just too cute! The camel and seahorse combo is an interesting one but you combined them perfectly.

@catlharper ‍ I'm not big on sushi but I'd eat yours! Lol. The names on the chopsticks is a cute idea :-)   Nice save with the soy sauce packets.

@Nana52 ‍ you were quite busy this week! My favorite is the one for your son-in-law with the fungi going up the side of the cake.  They look real.

@Natka81 ‍ very petty cake and a big one!

@Laetia ‍ your butterfly is adorable!  So cheery looking, can't help but smile looking at it.

@Dar917 ‍ cute cookies :-)

@GJsLady ‍  I think I already commented on yours when you posted it in last week's thread?

It was a busy week for me and I am definitely tired today but still have lots to do.  Starting to realize that I have stretched myself rather thin from now until essentially the end of Oct!

I made a Pete the Cat cake topper who will be shipped to Alabama midweek.  This is the 4th one I've made and the 3rd one destined for the US.  I had never even heard of him prior to making the first one for a friend.

Next were two dozen cupcakes for a 4 year old.  All she asked for were sprinkles. Lol. Her favorite color is purple so I went with two shades of it plus pink and white for the icing.  Topped them with colorful sprinkles plus a few silver ones and then a nice bright pink candy pearl on top.

I made a lunch box cake inspired by Yolanda Gampp (How to Cake It) for the Chem Club's welcome back BBQ.  I weenied out and didn't try standing it up as my cocoa banana cake is I think too soft to handle that.  I wanted to make all the little lunch box items that she had with her cake but simply did not have the time.  The students loved it and all had their phones out snapping pictures before it was cut.  I know most university students don't use lunch boxes but I thought it was a cute idea for back to school so "just had to make it".

I tried another new recipe for a family get together yesterday, banana choco hazelnut cake.  It was awesome!!  It is banana cake with chocolate ganache and Nutella SMBC and then I put praline hazelnut pieces around the base of it.  Initially the get together was planned because my boyfriend's sister was home from NC so I was using the opportuity to test the new recipe and had no intentions of doing any decorating on the cake.  Then his sister decided to turn it in to a retirement party for their dad so I found a simple idea to make it retirement themed.

Today I have a simple baby shower cake to put together plus flowers and cake lace to make for a wedding cake. Have to play soccer tonight too so no down time for me other than this post.  Pictures to follow with the baby shower cake coming later in he day.

For the retirement cake, I buggered up the SMBC a little while I was decorating the cake so I ran my spatula under warm water to smooth the icing and it darkened it :-(  Any tips on how to avoid this?

if the icing is cold just use your clean hand/fingers for small blemishes --

if it's a large area -- just use a plain spatula --

@kstevens ‍ I am just IN LOVE with your lunch box! My daughter is a science girl and for Christmas I got her a shirt with the atomic symbols spelling out "Bacon" - that's her other love.

No hot knives on SMBC ever! Like Kate said just get it good and cold in the fridge and add or scrape away what's bothering you.

Thanks for the tips @-K8memphis ‍ and @Pastrybaglady ‍ .  Rookie SMBC mistake....I know now for next time of which there will be as it received rave reviews. I'm no longer petrified to make it.

Glad you like the lunch box cake as my science themed cakes aren't usually very "pretty" and often go without getting much love. Lol

I think I am done making hydrangeas, at least for now.  Moving on to roses now then will break from them to assemble the baby shower cake.

Wow...just got my internet working again and came back to all these gorgeous cakes. Well done everyone, fantastic work. Since I'm normally not a big cookie person I have to say I really like those oyster cookies. What a fun idea!

Thanks for the well wishes.  Feeling a bit better and hope to be up and caking again soon!

I had a long post raving on all the beautiful and wonderful work this week and my phone went crazy and I couldn't posted it. That being said I love coming and looking at all the wonderful cakes. And other goodies.

Forgive me for not commenting on all of them again. I have to say the science girl in me just loved the lunch box cake. Even though me in Chemistry had our issues thankful I always aced the lab part.

Have a great week.

Thanks for the good words, I realy appreciate it! I guess my niece liked the cake...or not, but let me resume her reaction:

Her: Aunt Julie, why did you make a me butterfly cake??

Me: because your daddy told me that you ask for a butterfly cake....

Her: But..... But.... Now I want a princess cake!!

oh kids... I know that they can change their mind more often that they change their socks, but This kind of situation is always a little heart breaking!
