Oh my,

Ok, long story short: I've been doing edible images for about two years or so. On my second printer, went through two brands of paper, of which I find icing images premium sheets to be the best.

I've been generally happy with the turnout of my cakes but one thing is bothering me, when I use the sheets on the sides of cakes, the icing will shift or 'buckle' after a while, causing the image to crack and break.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas as to the cause?

Do you let the cake settle at all? That's probably what's causing the problem. Cake needs to sit and meditate for a while on it's life goals before it's final frost.

Lol, life goals indeed. Unfortunately no, I don't allow him or her time to find their way.

I usually smooth it out, then just adhere the images.

Approximately how much meditation time should I give?

There are many threads on settling and the time will vary. Some would say a few hours, some would say overnight, some rush it with a tile. Do a search and see what makes sense for your process.
