Our area is about 15 mins east of St Louis. We are a university town(Southern Illinois University @Edwardsville). There are corn and soy beans of course, but our area is known for horseradish production of all things! It is a suburb which is growing rapidly with shopping, and new restaurants etc. We have access to all kinds of ingredients for caking.Up until today we have had a summer of 90+s. So glad it is over!
This is a great thread, love to see the pictures from everyone
We have loads of bike trails everywhere and parks. Also the town is know for its covered bridge and historic blacksmiths cabin.
inga1 -- i happen to love horseradish fwiw ha!
and it looks (and sounds) positively idyllic there
wow kelly -- you live in a genuine hamlet -- quant quainter quaintest -- and all the activities around the tide coming in and out is completely different than anything i've encountered being inland -- sounds really cool
pastrybag lady and yortma -- you guys are neighbors how cool -- my son lives out there i think a little south of you in san jose/los gatos area -- it's gorgeous there -- most everything in california is actually smallish and quite pleasant-- just a bunch of one of a kind cute places
mbalaska -- you take the cake (ha!) beyond majestic, the cook inlet and all that beautiful water -- my brother just vacationed in homer and he had the time of his life -- still waiting for my share of all that fish he caught -- just any minute i'm sure hahahaha
lelekb -- so interesting and beautiful very great falls -- when i think of virginia i think of all the great foods you guys produce -- and just look at your garden -- have you ever been to the inn at little washingotn? we got to go once -- my son worked there
costumeczar and webake2gether -- always room for shopping, farming and factories -- beautiful lake
kayra850 -- your beautiful town looks so quaint -- european cities always seem so inviting -- the magnificent church building and all the rest of the town spiraling out from there -- sounds lovely
ladyellam -- arizona has the prettiest skies i think in the nation for sunsets and sunrises with the nature and all -- just something about arizona as shown in your picture too -- love arizona
kakeladi -- your picture looks like a beautiful needlepoint tapestry -- love california
bubs1st -- your city is very inviting -- the architecture on the main drag and all around is stunning -- sovereign hill looks like a little shopping mecca too
sweetshop and jchuck -- talk about architecture -- ottowa is amazing -- and all the parlez vous francais -- (if i spelled that right) i always think of celine dion too -- she's from there i think?
i lived in toronto for a winter and it was a lot of fun -- so much more european than the u.s. -- right outside of kensington square you could get pierogis in a restaurant -- just unheard of in the states at that time in the early 70's -- i lived on bloor street in a high rise -- and on humperdink or humperside drive or something out in the burbs or somewhere -- and the subways are whisper quiet -- unlike chicago where i can hear them and the el train pulling up to a stop from here hahahahaha -- and the pubs -- those are so cool and the trolly -- beautiful city too
jchuck -- me_me1 lives in perth australia on page 1 -- then posted about hyde park later
Lizzie...looks beautiful. I'm gonna get to Scotland one day soon. Was supposed to be this summer. But daughter had a 2nd baby. Needs lots of help. So postponed. My Mom was from Stranraer.

Ha Ha K8memphis
it's Ottawa...misprint there!
Yes, Ottawa has some beautiful historic buildings. Especially on Capital hill. There's lots to see in the city that's walkable. Most who live and work there are bilingual, speak English and French. Unfortunately, they don't teach French in school unless you enroll in what they call French emmersion. So myself and my children never learned French. Should have been mandated by the Federal government. School boards fought it. Kinda silly considering we have two official languages.
And no, Celine Dion isn't from Ottawa, but from Quebec. There are a couple of bridges in Ottawa where you can walk right into Quebec.
So you lived in Toronto did you. It's changed sooooo much since you were there. Too many condo's. It's always busy, busy there. Behind the times tho...they should have rapid transit like the cities in Europe. We were in Poland last May..hubby's Polish. Warsaw was big, clean..had rapid transit, subway and trains. Super efficient. My daughter & son in law lived in downtown Toronto for a year. Absolutely hated it. There are some lovely areas...little "villages" all over Toronto. Very similar to New York City. But very, very...I mean very expensive. Small semi detached home are going for a million dollars. As my Mom used to say....Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!!!
I'll try this again.....I really wish they'd fix CC so we can post text and photos together.....
@-K8memphis we experience the highest tides in the world here. When it's all the way out you can walk for what seems like forever before your feet are in the water. It's pretty cool. I found a couple of pictures to give you a idea. One is with the tide partially out and the second one is with the tide fully out (taken from the other side of the rock formation). Unfortunately I can't find any photos of the same area at high tide but at high tide all you would see is the bit of grass and the tree on the rock that is furthest out. Hope that made sense.
That is very cool Kelly. Unfortunately, I never got to see this part of Nova Scotia when I was there. Got to see lots of Halifax and surrounding area visiting daughter when she liced there. Did do the Cabot trail. Now that's another spectacular area..
I am about an hour from Halifax. I commuted to work there (at Dalhousie university) for 13 years. Now I only have to drive 15 minutes to get to work at Acadia university :-)
I live in the good ole city of Philadelphia, Pennslyvania <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotos-g60795-Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.html#60502015"><img alt="" src="https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/9b/2f/ff/philadelphia.jpg"/></a><br/>This photo of Philadelphia is courtesy of TripAdvisor
@-K8memphis I do speak French, luckily I was enrolled in a French school so I now know 3 languages (English, French and Portuguese). I would say Ottawa is extremely bilingual, these days most people speak French and English as you have a huge advantage when applying for a job.
Toronto is a great city, but soooo different from Ottawa! We go a couple of times a year; the traffic drives me insane since there's so many people living there. I totally agree that there are many Europeans living there! As Jchuck mentioned, the houses are extremely expensive too! I do love going there to stock up on cake supplies, they have huge warehouses with everything you need while in Ottawa there's nothing sadly.

Oh my...quite a drive. Hubby drove an hour to a hour and a half to Downsview/Toronto for over 30 yrs. Doesn't miss it one bit! Much nicer a 15 min drive. Son had several friends who attended Acadia. Daughter went to St. Mary's in Halifax. Has her degree from there.

Been to Erie...not too far a drive from me, Pittsburgh, alas...driven past Philadelphia...never been. Looks like a great city.

@jchuck It really is great but the winter's are just so long and cold, but that's pretty much anywhere in Canada. You just never get used to it haha
Oh ya...Ottawa totally gets the snow. One thing my daughter disliked when she lived there. My son in law has several Aunts and Uncle's living there. One of the reasons they had to leave is my daughter couldn't speak French. She couldn't find a job because she wasn't bilingual. That's a job killer in Ottawa. They got offered job opportunities in Halifax, so they moved. Daughter went to university in Halifax, so she was already very familiar with the city.

Your not kidding Ottawa is soooo different from Toronto. I hope it never becomes as big and cosmopolitan as Toronto. How fortunate you speak 3 languages. I'm assuming parents are Portuguese?? Much easier to learn a 2nd language, when you speak another one already. Did you grow up in Ottawa?
And I bet you hit McCalls and Golda's Kitchen warehouses when you go to TO. Like being a kid in a candy store. Technically, there in Mississauga..which isn't too too bad. Busy, but not in the thick of TO.
@K8memphis Nope, never in Iowa...I've lived in Eastern KY all my life. You can't really see for the trees, but my house, shop and a few storage buildings sit on over 600 acres of farm land....my nearest neighbor is about a mile away...yet I'm only about 8-10 minutes out of the city, so it's the best of both worlds so to speak!
