Hi all, I live in a suburb about 15 miles from downtown Chicago. It's a family community of probably about 20,000. All the benefits of the suburbs but yet close to the action of the city.
kstevens ... what a great thread! I love seeing where everyone is at. :-)

I've been to Chicago..and absolutely loved it! Only had a week, and didn't get to see everything we wanted. We stayed in Evanston. Took the train in. We stayed last 2 days in downtown Chicago. Walked your famous street...The Magnificent Mile. Finally got into Filene's department store. Not sure if Oprah was still filming her show anymore. It was summer, and was told, all we would see was a building. We didn't bother to ck it out. And we loved the way the Lakeshore was built. No highrises, office buildings or houses to spoil the view. Our Lakeshore has been obliterated because of buildings all along. Use to be able to drive for miles and look out over the water. Sad our local govt gave into developers.

I miss going to Ottawa. Daughter moved to Halifax NS. So beautiful. Lived there 3 yrs. Miss it too. They moved back to Ont 1 1/2 years ago.
Have always wanted to see the fireworks on Parliament hill July 1st. That's my bday. Thought we would when daughter lived there. Nope..moved to Halifax before July. Next year's the biggie...150 yrs of Confederation!!
Home sweet home. My house is on the very left side of the picture...somewhere under one of those trees LOL
I live in the middle of farm country in NW Ohio. We have a whopping population of 1400. I like this picture, though. Makes the town look HUGE! :)

Oh, to live in a small community! I'm jealous!!
I moved to the greater Boston area to be near family. I do love being near them, but I hate the traffic.[postimage id="4955" thumb="900"]
Hi, all! I'm from Rochester, New York. 8 hours from New York City; 3 hours from Toronto; and close to the Finger Lakes Wine Country. Despite the outrageous taxes, this is a nice place to live and work. Short commutes, great places to eat, visit, and lots of stuff to do for all. [postimage id="4956" thumb="900"]

640 -- idk you only have a one leaf clover there on the interstate -- the picture is big -- the town -- especially with mimi coming right after -- not so much -- but it's drop dead gorgeous too -- I love farmland patchwork
@MimiFix -- Use Yah Blinkah ... great sign for Boston
@Julia1812 - Is that in the US? I could almost see your house
@Apti No, this is Kenya in Africa...completely forgot to mention that :D But your traffic arial looks like it could be here in the capital hahaha - I hate traffic! How do you deal with that on a daily basis?
julia, you live in a beautiful setting -- do you get bad weather much? -- could look this up but...
kelly -- i love this thread
@Julia1812 ooooh aaaaah, Kenya. Want more details, please. Born there? Moved there?
Are cakes same, or different?
@Inga1 -- I was an invited demonstrator for a 2013 class in Chicago. It was gorgeous with all sorts of trees and water and greenery.
I live in Syracuse, NY about 1 1/2 hrs from tootie224. We are about 4 hrs from NYC, give or take depending where you are going, we are also about 3 hrs from Niagar Falls. There is a lot to do around here; beautiful lakes, skiing, wine country (yum) and so much more. I have lived here my entire life. Like any place, there is good and bad, but it is home
@K8memphis The weather is one of the reasons I moved here initially. Never gets cold. During the raining season temperatures drop to about 75'F at night here at the coast and we all snuggle in under a thick duvet hahaha. It's very humid and hot normally.
@April No am not born here. I moved to kenya 10 years ago (feels like an eternity ) from Germany. Cakes are definitely NOT the same here like in the US. Stardard is I'd guess Walmart for the looks and the taste of shortening and tons of sugar. The main problem is the lack of supplies of good cakeing stuff, constant power outages (sometimes for a day or more) and finally bad roads to get them somewhere. The costs of ingredients are unproportionally high compared to the salaries (a good bar of chocolate cost as much as an average hourly wage).
Ooooh, traffic & commuting.... can't help but feel a teensy bit smug at my most recent house move a couple of months ago. I can now walk to my day job in the city!
And twice a day I get to walk through lovely Hyde Park.

a bar of good chocolate costs as much as an hour's wage -- wowsers -- but it's gotta come in on a refrigerated truck on those bumpy roads -- I guess it makes sense -- no not really but I get it --
we just broke a long hot humid spell -- it was 81 degrees f yesterday 27 c -- yahoo!
julua1812
That's a big jump from Germany to Kenya. Was it job related?? As you have so mych imported, understand why many things are expensive.
me_me1
Hyde Park where??
New York, London Toronto, Canada???

It has been one of the hottest summers here where I live EVER!!! Broke all records. Actually, it was so hot, you couldn't do any outdoor activities. I only played golf twice this summer. Can't play in insufferable heat and humidity. And now...it will soon be over..fall is right around the corner...which I love...but then winter...yuk..yuk!!!
jchuck -- i'm glad you asked me_me1 about which hyde park -- there's one in chicago too -- they're everywhere
yeah it's been heat advisories here for weeks -- when we play golf we go real early -- i drive the cart and he uses the clubs -- if he crabs too much about a bad shot he has to walk to the next hole -- hahahahaha -- but i drink like 40 ounces of water and we only 'play' nine -- it's really nice to get out though -- with the meds i take i get a great golden tan just by being out not even in the sun -- brutal conditions here so they open up shelters during the day for peeps who have no air conditioning --
***but we have no fires nor floods so i'm not complaining just reporting
tootie you get a lot of snow yes?
mimi -- that shot of that traffic is so confusing -- blows my brains -- so would anyone notice if you used yah blinkah? hahahahaha
tillsy -- be it ever so humble there's no place like home -- there's no place like home
inga1 -- are you in a cornfield out there? in a good way -- farmland -- or is it like a suburb all sprawling out
cali6422 -- i lived all up & down the lake shore from the southside to nearly evanston -- love me some chi-town!
K8memphis
I'm just not a "early morning" golfer. Don't love it that much. I'm more of a duffer. Like to play in the spring, early summer and fall. Hubby on the other hand..nuts about it. Plays 2-3 x's a week..even in the heat. Hubby loves the heat and humidity doesn't bother him...never has.
Yes, I'm fortunate that in my city/area we have a temperate climate. A micro climate. We have been fortunate not too have too many extremes. Yes, we had the heat advisory too, but just one week. That flooding was devastating. Just absolutely horrendous. Cannot imagine losing everything. Like the fire in California or Fort MacMurray, Alberta.
Illinois, like NY, is very similar to Ontario in climate and geography. Beautiful. I went all over N Y state and Pennsylvania camping/with trailer, with my parents growing up.
jeff -- were you in iowa previously?
and
that's more of curve than a corner -- ha!
wow it's gorgeous though -- nice and quiet looks like
@K8memphis Yes...chocolate. Imagine!
@jchuck Yes it was initially...but know I got hooked lol. Guess there are two sides of a medal no matter where you are in this world...
