I am going to make the cake for my daughter's baby shower.  I am going to make a 3D sugar fondant elephant and circles to sit on top.  Would I need a particular type of cake to support his weight?  I would appreciate any suggestions or recipes.

No, you can use any type of cake.  If he is that heavy, just put some type of support in there.  Sometimes I'll put a straw under a topper.  Or, when I've had bigger toppers, I've put 3 straws in a triangle and put a 4" cake board over them to put the topper on.

If it's just a little 2-3" elephant made out of fondant, you shouldn't need anything.  I do those all the time with every type of cake.
