Please help.

I am decorating a cake and need black icing. I added 5 drops of americolor black gel food coloring and the icing is turning gray not black. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Add more :) I use americolor food coloring gels and just made black fondant with it and I'm certain it took more than 5 drops to make black. Your starting with white so it will take a bit to make it dark.

It usually works great for black. I would add more.

If you start with a chocolate base icing or fondant, you will need a lot less food coloring to reach a black color.

Give it some time as well.  It will darken as it sets, but yeah more than 5 drops!  Try a squirt and then give it some time.
