Hi, there. A bride wants a cake similar to this one below but she wants a buttercream cake, not a fondant covered cake. Could I accomplish these drapes with buttercream? or do you think I could do fondant drapes and attachthem to the buttercream? Would they be too heavy? Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

You can definitely attached fondant drapes to buttercream.  Those don't look too heavy.

AThere is a Craftsy class by Matsha Winbeckler that is awesome on drapes and swags! I just watched it and used it on this cake this past weekend. I have done a cake very similar to that one. A client actually sent me that exact photo. If you look closely at the drapes on that cake, they aren't your traditional fondant drapes, they are more flat to the cake & do not stick out like the regular drapes (the ones you use a dowel rod to make the pleats)... these drapes were done using a drape mold. I had a really hard time figuring out which mold was used & where to get it, but I finally found it on ebay...

Yes it sure does! It took me half the time with that mold than making them myself using dowel rods. It also gives the cake a slightly different look.
