Can I cover a masonite cake board with fondant?

sure-- you can either apply it to a board moistened with water or use a thin layer of shortening -- like put some on and wipe most of it off -- 

Sure.  I do it all the time.  Just moisten the board a little so it will stick well.  I also recommend letting it dry for a few days.
