Hi Emma

There are lots of great tutorials here http://cakecentral.com/t/654103/hundreds-of-tutorials-in-here

Any type of cake will work under fondant (I mean flavor) but you do need a cake that is not too soft or it can crumble under the weight. Also the icing you use under the fondant is important.

One year olds won't eat a lot of cake really. So a plain vanilla or chocolate flavor cake always goes down well, if there are other children too.

Thank you Pearl123 I also was wondering how long  before hand can i make the fondant and can i leave it in the fridge until I'm ready to roll it out or do i need to roll it out as soon as i make it also if i make the hole thing in advance how long can i store it and how do i store it.
