I have been requested to make a chocolate birthday cake and decorate with fondant. I don't want to cover a chocolate cake with fondant as the flavour combination is not great in my opinion, but then I am very limited on ideas of how to decorate the cake for a birthday celebration. The cake is for a man's 30th birthday and I am really unsure of how to decorate the cake.

Any ideas or tips would be really helpful.

i always resort to scrolls for a guy if there no other direction--you can make some awesome scrolls out of fondant--

or stripes

or a combination

you could put a big 30 on top

you could make scroll-a-ramas around '30's

no no no no no-i got it--put a cool big 30 on top--bevel it up--not standing and just start winding scrolls all around & down from there going every which way

i love it lol

AIf you would like an alternative to fondant that you can suggest to your customer you might want to consider a chocolate collar. If they definitely want fondant but don't have any thoughts on what they want for decoration, stripes and/or polka dots are always easy. :)
